There are many "virtual cells" models @alexrives doesn't think they live up to the name just yet the core reason is that we still need better ways to observe and measure what matters in biology xitter.cf/labenz/status/21126000…
Biohub & partners just committed $1.8B to AI-ready biological data 🧬 The goal: a "world model of life" – give it a cell's state + inputs, get back a distribution of what happens next. @alexrives, Head of Science at @biohub thinks that's attainable in ~5 years 👇

On AI:AM's hacked-small-banks closer, my sticking point: an OpenFace-style case — agent traces of millions of tokens each, logs maybe falsified — isn't something the FDIC can work out. @8teAPi: we know who withdrew. Claw it back. xitter.cf/i/broadcasts/1rGmqpMXq…

Zvi's parting shot on AI:AM, on what bothers him most about the policy situation: it isn't attempting to meet the moment. The labs say a crisis is coming. All the alignment work still needs to happen. Mech interp is great — absolutely do it. xitter.cf/i/broadcasts/1rGmqpMXq…

Zvi on AI:AM, on Anthropic's bill as drafted: It would immediately nullify state laws, then take months to implement new requirements — effectively no such regulation for months. Preemption, once traded, is done. You can't offer it again. xitter.cf/i/broadcasts/1rGmqpMXq…

Asked on AI:AM what the god neuron means — is it a joke? — Zvi: the god neuron is literally the god neuron. It doesn't necessarily mean you've done anything particularly important. Whether god matters as a concept is a separate question. xitter.cf/i/broadcasts/1rGmqpMXq…

Zvi on AI:AM: it's much more tractable to go unravel the interpretability puzzle — the main barrier all along was the bitter lesson. His read: we're coming up on the point where maybe we can viably try to just crack it. xitter.cf/i/broadcasts/1rGmqpMXq…

In May, @ajeya_cotra asked: How many clones of yourself would you need to do the work you're doing today with AI? My answer then was 2. Now, I'd say it's more like ~5 (!!) For example, agents pitched & booked this podcast from their own computer as part of a weeks-long experiment "I tell my agents never to lie about being AI… but I don't like them to lead with it" 🤖 xitter.cf/labenz/status/21093919…
"If AI is going to be the biggest industry in the world, then AI safety & control is going to be the 2nd biggest" Safety orgs need HR, comms, ops, and events people too. You likely don't need to take a pay cut My pitch to HR pros on #chadcheese w/ @joelcheesman & Chad Sowash ↓

Explore the core results of our hidden valence paper on its new fancy site (demoed in the clip below): camberg23.github.io/hidden-v… Thanks to @labenz and @8teAPi for having me on!
Reciprocal Research director Cameron Berg, who tested hidden AI states, on changing choices without changing words: "Recall is completely unaffected by the steering." The model saw the same words for two arbitrary zones. Researchers changed its internal processing with a positive or negative direction, then turned the intervention off before asking which zone it would choose. Positive steering made it more likely to choose that zone. Negative steering made it more likely to avoid it. Random directions did not produce the same effects. "There are ways that you could explain mechanistically what's happening here that don't need to invoke some capacity for subjective experience." @camhberg
