Adhering to the ECHR is important! If the Tories want out then you have to think why? We should be adding more rights not stripping away those we have!

I love Brazil Nuts The front of the package says "High in Selenium" It has a green background The traffic light system tells me Green is Good High in Protein or High in Calcium is good, so guess what I thought? That eating as many nuts as I want is good Too much Selenium is toxic

What will you do when Private Equity firms start buying the supermarkets? We already know what happens when they buy into water companies Govts have to roll back legislation that allows business to run like vultures & parasites When the life blood runs out, the parasites leave

Democracy: a system where the majority votes for a Govt that works for the minority Politics: a way of convincing the majority that an ideology that works for the minority, is worth democratically voting for Politicians: a group who stand against need & bow down to greed

A billionaire isn't a billionaire cuz they worked hard No, they're billionaires cuz they exploited & gamed the system They told a story so convincing, they got us believing in them & we gave them our hard work & money And as long as they keep the illusion going, we give them more

So banks want to keep "our records up to date" because British law requires them to do so So why do they need to know about non UK accounts, which are not governed by UK law? I've been with the same bank since 2004 If you don't "Know Your Customer" by now, whenever will you?

You can't create a wealth fund on taxes It's profits that generate wealth You need to be a shareholder in any venture & should be at least 51% controlling on extraction of our resources That way, we all benefit, not just the few Taxes, like saving, & hoarding, reduce growth
โ€˜We'd have a British sovereign wealth fund now that will be worth probably a trillion poundsโ€™ Chancellor @JohnHealey_MP suggests what Britain could have gained if it had set up an energy wealth fund like Norwayโ€™s back in the 1980s #Peston

This is where I am politically right now. Despite Melenchon's rousing speeches and appeals to appropriate post-Keynesian economic policies, the current European riots have sunk into their usual headless, directionless shape. The polls have hardly shifted - le Pen was already well ahead. Any 'revolutionary' situation will be captured by the far right. The awkward corollary of what I've written below is that if we seek to construct a serious, committed opposition, first we must elicit an equal and opposite fear grounded in reality. We must replace the manufactured fears of immigrants, public 'debt', bond markets and so on with an overriding objective fear. What will really happen to the West if we carry on like this? It's an unfortunate fact that fear is the primary fuel for the hope, rational discussions of political economy and positive protest and action - aimed at what we're FOR rather than against - that come later. Dupuy's 'enlightened catastrophism' - @winlow_s has written about this cambridge.org/core/books/absโ€ฆ and there's a useful summary here. cyrilhedoin.substack.com/p/eโ€ฆ

The constant flow of 'assured nonsense' you hear from the likes of Friedman - temporary winners, aspirers and their mouthpieces - is what aroused my interest in neuropsychology years ago. Ideological positions driven at root by primary affective demands - fear of loss and sacrifice being the strongest - create what Adrian Johnston calls 'deaptation'. The very thought of true democracy and the prioritisation of collective needs - the 'public interest' - triggers that fear. The more serial market failures and their negative real effects refute their position, the more fearful they become, which strengthens their beliefs, even though, cognitively, the relatively brighter ones might understand their absurdity. The evasive ethical/cognitive justification invoked is the sort of Churchillian 'least-worst' thinking you hear all the time - "ok, this is absurd and quite awful but it's better than socialism and we'll get through this rocky patch". The worse things get - and they will - the more they will double down on their beliefs. There will be no limits to their corruption and violence. No point in reasoning with them - we must construct a serious opposition amongst the unaffected and unconvinced.

Ever noticed how some people leave negative comments on small accounts that aren't influencing many people with their commentary, yet seemingly enough to touch a raw nerve for the common troll? They're not trying to debate Why else would they bother to reply with pure nonsense?

Do you not get angry over the fact that the same money that is created by Govts to facilitate trade, is being used to promote, donate & fund future parties? People who have used extractive power to secure huge financial independence, depend on Govt to keep their parasitic gains

Neoliberalism is leaving the door open to fascism Do you see that as a warning or as an inevitable outcome that you can't do anything about? Before WWII, there were many people who supported Hitler in the UK & US It took war to finally see the devastation fascism causes

I repeat, I'm not exclusively #MMT. But why do none of the professional economists on this thread apart from Itamar understand it even at a basic level? For instance, MMT does advocate tax increases in specific circumstances. It's basically a description of the operation of fiat currency systems, influenced by but not limited to older positions such as Chartalism, functional finance, endogenous money creation, sectoral balances and financial instability. It's certainly related to post-Keynesianism, which can help remedy some of its flaws such as trade balances, international currency valuation etc. I'm just a lowly all-rounder - economic history, sociology, social psychology - who worked in criminology departments. If I can understand it and summarise it why can't professional economists? Spoiler - the basic reason is that they have to straw-man it to fit their ideologically bound off-the-peg criticisms. Empirically grounded and theoretically sophisticated reformulation of provisional knowledge just isn't their forte. Paradigm-changing ideas are out of the question - disallowed. I block these people because there's no point in debating with them. You might as well argue with scientologists. I'm not trashing the intellectual capabilities of individuals I don't know outside their orthodox writings, but simply stating the incontrovertible truth that thus far the mainstream neoclassical position has been ideologically locked, that's all. Press any of them hard enough and you'll find its dual root is a deep fear of the state, socialism, collectivism, totalitarianism etc. and an equally deep belief in the individual's right to enter markets to aquire and bequeath unlimited assets. Professional/institutional advocates are not allowed to stray from these principles.
