Uh-oh. I hear New South Wales in Oz is considering a phonics check that may include (gasp!) nonsense words such as POS, TER, DRIV, SWOL, DREN, and LOP. That's prePOS/TERous DRIVel. Utter codSWOL/LOP. Our chilDREN do not need the ability to read nonsense words. @DyslexiaMSL

I've spent the better part of the past 3.5 yrs reporting on how children are taught to read and what scientists have figured out about how children learn -- and the shocking disconnect. In this presentation, I tell the story of what I've learned. youtube.com/watch?v=GO4_S26g…

Don’t be fooled by reassurances that students are learning “phonics in context” or as a “balanced literacy” diet. Both are euphemisms for a non-systematic, non-evidence-based approach. My article in the Weekend Australian today: theaustralian.com.au/inquire…

How deep does the legacy of #WholeLanguage run through our education system? So far I’ve found its now discredited and outmoded ideas embedded in #ITE #ProfessionalLearning, Education Departments, #EducationalConsultants & the #Curriculum. THESE VIDEOS ARE PRIME EXAMPLES 👇 #mt

In which @ParkerPhonics suggests that the simple view of reading requires language comprehension (rather than merely listening comprehension referred to by @ReadingShanahan) and restores balance to the world of Reading Twitter.
