Re: Google shutting of Search for students
I believe the intent of this post below was to confuse. It's a shame it starts off with "We want to clarify".
It didn't address whether a school can have Search without AI Overviews or AI Mode, which is what people were upset about.
If I am reading this correctly, Google is saying that If a school turns Search ON, students get AI Overviews & AI Mode.
Google is calling that "Search". And Search includes AI features.
It does note one thing correctly which some news outlets didn't cover- other products may be turned on and off separately.
Google said "more choice, not less". This is true for Gemini but NOT for Search because there's no option for Search without AI.
That aside, imo what people SHOULD be worried about is that AI Mode will offer step-by-step "guided learning".
- In good news, if students answer questions, AI Mode won't spit out answers.
- In bad news, parents don't know what "Guided Learning" in AI Mode will look like.
So, nobody outside Google knows what Guided Learning teaches or how.
- There's no published curriculum.
- Was it checked it for accuracy? Bias? Age-appropriateness?
- The pilot starts this month. Do teachers even know what this is?
- Did Google literally roll this out with zero feedback from parents?! 😅
I'm guessing it's very similar to Gemini "Guided Learning", which can be tested here: gemini.google.com/guided-lea…
(I tested this for a few minutes - and - some of the results are deeply concerning..)
We want to clarify what we announced today about our education services. Today’s announcements give schools more choice, not less. Here’s what we announced:
- Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search will be OFF 🔴 by default. This is based on K-12 schools asking for more control over student use of AI services.
- Schools are in control: They can choose to turn ON 🟢 one, two, or all of these services individually.
- We are also updating Search for schools to make it better for learning. Specifically, AI Mode and AI Overviews will offer step-by-step guided learning through problems, so that students don’t get quick answers to schoolwork.
We know there’s concern about students using AI to shortcut schoolwork, and schools have told us they want control. That’s exactly why we are making these changes today to address the feedback we’ve heard from educators in recent months. And we’ll continue to engage deeply with educators to ensure we are giving schools more choice, more controls, and improved Search for learning.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search are off by default for K-12 student accounts. Schools can choose which to enable. However, Google says Search and AI are deeply integrated. Schools that disable AI will not have access to Search. arstechnica.com/ai/2026/11/goo… bloomberg.com/news/articles/… forbes.com/sites/danfitzp…

AI Overviews now occasionally shows an (outdated and incorrect) chart on desktop.
(And this is why I call it #AISlopOverviews)
Google is now showing AI Overviews when you look up stock prices.. Instead of - just showing stock prices..
