ICYMI: Mountain snowpacks are natural water towers, storing winter precip until summer when downstream water demand is greatest. Earlier snowmelt and rainfall in spring are #climatechanging the picture. Key new study by @kateehale et al.
The Snow Storage Index, which combines the amount of precipitation and the delay in water input from melt, has decreased in western North America since 1950 due to earlier snowmelt, spring rains and less winter precipitation @kateehale @INSTAAR @CUBoulder nature.com/articles/s43247-0…

"Recent decreases in snow water storage in western North America" is out today: nature.com/articles/s43247-0… Here we develop a new metric for evaluating the storage of water in the snowpack as a function of the timing and magnitude of precipitation relative to water availability.

An eye-catching and excellent remake of the usual basin 'bucket' diagram--including many smaller reservoirs too. (I see you, Paonia Res.!) Really drives home that #CORiver system glass is mostly empty. Props to @_nbqs for the visualization, and @awhager for pointing it out.
The long-term drought in the Colorado River Basin continues, and it’s not just Lake Powell and Lake Mead.
