Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

A policy decision that sparked seismic social and cultural transformation inside our country. And not a single person voted for it.

Reminds me of that Fools and Horses sketch where Del Boy nicks the yellow paint from British Rail to paint the Chinese takeaway. He convinces Rodney it’s legit because more security guards will be employed, more paint will be ordered, balance of payments will go down etc.

They literally chose the demographic least likely to be guilty of this behaviour to demonstrate the behaviour. It's like, in modern Western government, you must push forward the opposite of reality in order to demonstrate and improve it.

I recently spent some time with former colleagues from academia. All of them brilliant, peak human capital. Almost all of them fundamentally unable to plug into the economy, inoculated against productivity by a youth spent experimenting in laboratories instead of building wealth for society. Dealing with real people in the real world.
90% of them have left academia in the last 10-15 years, and 90% of those are functionally unemployed. Grad school does a lousy job of training scientists to be professors (since most of them don't get the good postdoc or tenure track position) and an even worse job of preparing people for real life.
We complain that our societal infrastructure is collapsing, our state capacity is low, our incumbent industries are faltering. Where are the next generation of leaders that can push us forward?
A huge fraction of them were conveyor-belted into academia by schooling systems that have no mechanism to channel ambition and 99+%ile competence, and our universities are mostly hedge funds with glorified psych wards/academic departments on the side, running an insane pyramid scheme that exists only to prove, over and over again, the Shirky Principle: Institutions will try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution.
We literally poured trillions of dollars into state-funded research and effectively neutered our elite civilian technical leadership development programs.
I recently asked a few academic friends if they were finding AI useful in accelerating their programs of research. You know, to solve the Big Problem their entire field exists to solve?
Some were. But most were complaining about how it created pedagogical issues, explaining how their department decided to ban the use of AI, or how it took 18 months to approve an enterprise account, or how they tried Gemini 2 on a puzzle a year ago and it wasn't very helpful, or repeating nonsense about datacenters and water consumption, or supposed IP theft by model companies, as though that has any bearing on their ability to, eg, accelerate a cure for cancer.
Elon sometimes calls AI a supersonic tsunami - a huge wave you don't see coming. I see it coming. But even the people who you'd think have been waiting for this their entire careers are steadfastly looking in the other direction.

France is in flames (yet he wants to rejoin the EU).
Trump is selling out Ukraine, cosying up to Putin again
A cost-of-living crunch is looming this winter, especially fuel bills.
He still hasn’t told us how or when defence spending will reach 3% GDP.
Inflation is rising once more, as are interest rates.
Russian forces are threatening our infrastructure, especially undersea data and energy links.
The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, our Gulf allies are under attack.
And PM Burnham drivels about this!!
It’s like the opening sketch from Saturday Night Live.

Shout out to UK public order trained coppers. When / if "it" happens here, I'm sure you'll do duty. Remember, though, nobody has your back. Nobody. Legally, they treat riots as if they were pub fights. Not an existential challenge to a way of life. Mind how you go.
Painful listening to #bbcnews reporting on #FranceRiots. “What could possibly have caused this?” they ponder, clutching their pearls. Talk of student ‘protests’, capitalism, online misinformation etc etc. The usual left wing tropes. The elephant in the room went undiscussed.

Reminder: just yesterday we learned that:
A) a former ISIS guard for a beheading squad came to yookay illegally on a boat, obviously because of the ECHR/HRA he can't be jailed or deported, living freely;
B) SAS guys sent on missions to deal with ISIS beheaders were then arrested for MURDER for dealing with them; they were lied to by the military police; they have been told they can never be clear of the charges (because the ECHR/HRA means any time some lawyer like Jolyon or Hermer wants to team up with nutters on a ECHR case, the government will be forced to investigate again and remember Hermer's friend *invented* war crimes to bring cases against British soldiers, but obviously wasn't jailed, triples all round in the Inner Temple).
So we're importing the jihadis at scale while prosecuting for murder SAS we rely on to defend us from the jihadis - and if you don't like this you're fascist and it's a reason to ban X in yookay.
No you will not see Kemi-kasi campaign on these issues because the Tories agreed with Labour for 25 years that this combination is 'defending civilisation'. The Tories imported many of the jihadis now in the news, and the Tories approved all the worst officials and lawyers in SW1 bringing the lawfare cases, including against those who were given medals by the Queen for stopping IRA terrorist attacks - they now have to beg for cash for lawyers in their 70s/80s.
And because Reform is a bin fire which can't maintain focus on anything for 2 minutes -- like Kemi-kasi -- you probably won't see anything sustained from them either.
You genuinely have to accept that you did the best you could at the time. "If only I didn't screw up" honestly you would've been screwed anyway
"I should've sold it, sent it, did it" yeah but there was a reason you didn't. You were a huge idiot but dude you were supposed to be. You've never been in that situation before. You can't expect yourself to operate at a "level 7-10" wisdom with "level 1-3" experience
That's exactly how this life thing works. You fuck up, recover, fuck up a little less than before, then recover a little more than before, and you perpetually repeat that cycle until the lessons learned finally match the outcomes achieved
Have to put the what if's to rest. Have to give yourself grace. Have to tell yourself that you can't regret something when everything is always meant to happen for your own benefit. Toughest part of being human but promise it will make sense one day. Never throw in the towel before that day comes

I believe women like this will never learn, for the following reasons:
-their beliefs aren’t based on reality, so reality can’t change them
-they can justify anything by appealing to ‘oppression’ and/or emotion (as we know, even killing one’s own children can become noble to them)
-the more they suffer for their beliefs, the more saintly they become in their twisted false religion
-once everything else has been destroyed, their beliefs are all they’ll have left
They’ll only change if and when the consensus changes. This isn’t the same as applying reason, it’s just conformity.

“we will pay any price….to assure the success and survival of liberty.” Is this still true? Do we prize liberty or do we prize power and purse? No more clear test than the choice between Ukraine and Russia. Abandon Ukraine and we abandon liberty. Eventually even our own.

It’s pathetic on the part of @SkyNews What happened in France yesterday had nothing to do with the high-school students or the yellow vests. Knee jerk leftist reporting.

Pathetic, meaningless address from President Macron to the people of France tonight. The anger here is palpable. I have written what it all means in a column in tomorrow’s Daily Mail. L’agonie de la France is set to continue and Macron is now an irrelevance.
