For all the hand wringing about the ‘far right’, it turns out the far left is a real danger to society. This week’s @Independent_ie column

Whatever happened to the great @RTELateLateShow that everyone loved, where they picked average people from all over the country to come on for an interview? We are so sick of seeing the same old people go on it.

I remade this chart to show the relative growth from migrants. And it tells a horrifying story for Ireland. Do the Irish people actually want this?
You couldn’t meet a more incompetent selfish individual in @MichealMartinTD
This will come back to haunt the government.
The Triple Lock has been voted down by the FF, FG and Independent government at 2nd stage.
Willie O'Dea, John McGuinness and Barry Heneghan did not attend the vote. #IrishNeutrality
For years the fields at Raheen sat quietly two kilometres from University Hospital Limerick. Inside the hospital it was anything but quiet. UHL’s emergency department became the busiest in the country. Trolleys filled corridors, patients waited days for beds, and staff worked in permanent crisis mode. Tragedies, including the death of teenager Aoife Johnston, finally forced a reckoning. HIQA’s 2025 review confirmed an immediate risk to patient safety across the Mid-West: there simply wasn’t enough capacity.
In March 2026 the HSE bought 43–44 acres at Raheen for €14 million—one of the largest hospital sites in Ireland. Close enough to Dooradoyle for shared services, big enough for more beds, a possible second emergency department, and room to grow for Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. Ministers called it a game-changer. Clinicians called it long overdue.
Yet months later the fields remain empty. A project board exists, but construction has not started. Meanwhile UHL still sees days with over 300 emergency presentations, and another winter is coming. Every delay means more corridor care, more exhausted staff, and more families waiting.
Those 43 acres are not a future luxury. They are the practical answer to a system that has already shown it cannot safely absorb demand. Phased building could open beds years before a full campus is finished. Without that start, the Mid-West stays locked in the same cycle that produced the HIQA warning and the tragedies that came before it.
The site is bought. What matters now is turning grass into beds lets not waist time—because for the people of the Mid-West, the difference is measured in waiting times and, ultimately, in lives.

Put it to a referendum @MichealMartinTD and let the people decide very simple. 🇮🇪👍

Well done Dee Ryan the additional overcrowding in the Hospital is very bad - we need works to start immediately on the Raheen site this in return takes away massive pressure from UHL.
Take note @MichealMartinTD & @OCallaghanJim if other countries are now noticing the direct dangers of immigration - we hope you are listening!
Shocking videos and images are coming out of France. Historic buildings have been destroyed, hundreds of police officers have been injured, and enormous material damage has been caused amid the escalating vandalism and violence of recent days.
In the face of this senseless destruction and unjustified violence, perhaps it is now clear to everyone why Hungary advocates the strictest possible approach to migration, and why we will not weaken our border protection or immigration policy under any pressure.
I am glad that the current EU summit has made it clear that the overwhelming majority of European countries have woken up and want to break with the permissive policies of the past. We hope it is not too late.
Let there be no doubt: peaceful and lawful protest is one thing; vandalism and violence are quite another. The former is a fundamental right; the latter is a serious crime.
The Europe we all love is in serious trouble today. It is our responsibility, too, to help preserve our continent as the most wonderful place in the world for our children and grandchildren.
Europe can count on Hungary.
I express my full solidarity with the French people.
Describes the government perfectly they have lost all sense of value for money. And it is going to come back on the people who are already struggling. Incompetence comes to mind.
🔺David McWilliams: The Irish State has become a monstrously bloated organisation that has lost all sense of value for money
"Even from a cyclical perspective, a country at full employment does not need any more money thrown at it – the economy is already bursting at the seams – and yet this week’s Budget 2027 is throwing a net €7.4 billion extra into an already bloated system"
