The owner of El Arepazo, an iconic Venezuelan restaurant in Doral, told Trump he was “the best president we have seen in our life!” Now an employee says restaurant sales are down 80%, as Doral becomes a ghost town due to ICE raids. thebulwark.com/p/doral-flori…

Excited to share this @WSJ project: I went home to Miami to see how the Hispanic voters who helped propel Trump to victory are feeling ahead of the midterms. What I found? Deep frustration, esp. over immigration—and it could keep some who backed him home. wsj.com/politics/elections/i…

There's a word for this; perversion. The Trump admin has perverted the cause of refugee resettlement (protecting the world's most vulnerable people) into a mechanism for mass deportation, where dictators and authoritarians are instead rewarded for imprisoning the unwanted.
The Washington Post spent months inside the State Department bureau that is supposed to resettle refugees. What they found is a $410 million deportation operation, run with money Congress appropriated to move people to safety. Read this #AfghanEvac 🧵 all the way through.

ICE wants to deport Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a DoorDash driver who they just shot in Austin yesterday. The federal government can't shoot someone and then try to make them disappear to escape scrutiny. Wilber Rafael Garces Perez needs a doctor right now, not a deportation.
Homeland Security Investigations, with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is leading the investigation into the officer involved shooting of an illegal alien from Venezuela, who illegally entered our country under the Biden administration and had a final order of removal, during a law enforcement operation today in Austin, TX. The illegal alien’s condition is stable, and he is in federal custody pending removal. This is a developing situation, and we will update the public when more information becomes available.

The horror has come to our city: ICE has shot a person in Austin this morning. As the facts emerge, I am demanding a full, independent investigation, immediate release of the body camera footage, and accountability for any ICE officer who broke the law. Over and over, ICE has shot people and then lied about what happened. We can see the lies with our own eyes. We will demand truth, transparency and accountability.

The Trump mass deportation agenda is to make the immigration process so onerous that talented, bright immigrants cannot remain in America after attending school here. I led my Democratic colleagues to introduce a resolution of disapproval to block this Administration’s attacks on immigrant students.

I personally witnessed how immigrants in this country were treated like animals under Trump. We spoke out against it. But too many chose to ignore when children were separated from their parents and kept in cages. These images shouldn’t surprise anyone. The relentless dehumanization of our Latino communities has fueled hate, normalized cruelty and incited violence. These human rights abuses must stop. Now.

Stephen Miller and Donald Trump are the architects of unfathomable cruelty, allowing immigrants to be shoved into small cages as punishment & in violation of ICE’s own standards. Alligator Alcatraz—and the abuse that happened inside its walls—will be remembered as a stain on our nation’s history.
JUST IN: In a sweeping report published on Monday, the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general found that detainees of the "Alligator Alcatraz" immigration detention facility in Florida were confined to small metal enclosures, presenting "significant risks" to their health and safety. abcnews.link/13miwZJ?utm_sou…

In Alligator Alcatraz, detainees were being punished with something called “the box” an enclosed space in which they were shackled and left outdoors for hours, exposed to the heat and mosquitoes. There’s now a photos. Amnesty International determined this constituted torture.

The “foreign students are taking American seats” argument badly misunderstands how U.S. higher education works. International students are only 6% of total enrollment. They are concentrated where America needs enormous amounts of advanced talent: 61% of CS PhDs 54% of Engineering PhDs 51% of Math/Stats PhDs But here is the part everyone misses: Over the last 20 years, S&E PhDs earned by Americans ALSO increased 61%, even as foreign S&E PhDs increased. America didn't replace Americans. It expanded its research machine by recruiting BOTH. And now the domestic pipeline is getting smaller: U.S. high-school graduates are projected to fall 13% to 3.4M by 2041. Meanwhile, global talent recruited through American universities helped produce the MOSFET, LASIK technology, digital-video breakthroughs, Nobel-winning chemistry , foundation of AI and countless other advances. And this is why gutting OPT is so self-defeating. OPT is the bridge between “study in America” and “build in America.” Destroy that bridge, and the best students don't simply graduate and disappear. Many stop choosing America in the first place. Then the talent goes to Canada, Britain, Europe or more and so do the researchers, startups, patents and breakthroughs that would have followed. That was America's genius: Educate Americans AND vacuum up the best minds the rest of the world produces. OPT helps America keep the upside. Destroy the pipeline, and our competitors will gladly take it.
🚨 The proposed $100,000 OPT fee could be catastrophic for American universities and if universities are expected to pay it, the policy becomes almost absurd. Think about it: A student pays an American university tens of thousands of dollars, graduates, and gets hired by an entirely separate company. Why on earth should the UNIVERSITY owe $100,000 because SOME RANDOM EMPLOYER hired its graduate? Universities will respond rationally: They will admit fewer international students. International students will take their tuition, talent and research elsewhere. Graduate STEM programs will get hit. American employers will lose one of their biggest pipelines of U.S.-educated talent and universities already facing enrollment pressure will lose billions more. This isn't just an immigration restriction. It risks turning an international student from an asset universities compete to recruit into a six-figure financial liability after graduation , that changes the economics of American higher education overnight. You don't strengthen American universities by making their successful graduates a financial punishment.

OPT $100,000 fee has cleared White House review and will be posted as a rule any day now. Universities will be the ones to pay it, which makes no sense because why would they pay a fee for some random employer?
The vast majority of immigrants with U.S. STEM PhDs use the OPT program to stay in the country. The world has a shortage of people with these skills. It is our advantage that they're drawn to our university STEM programs--which are the best in the world.

Thousands of immigrants did the hard, dirty work of clearing rubble and toxic dust and debris from Ground Zero. Many were undocumented laborers sent to work every day with no special PPE, and got cancer as a result. Now some of those same people are living in fear of ICE.

NEW: Trump admin has cleared a VERY rule putting a $100,000 fee on every int. student of a US university who uses the Optional Practical Training (OPT) to stay & work after graduating. Hundreds of thousands of highly educated grads will be sent out of the country. 10/10 BAD…

No such $100,000 fee rule for OPT has been cleared or finalized; it remains only under internal discussion per reports, and the linked reginfo.gov page lists no relevant rules. reginfo.gov/public/do/eoRe… forbes.com/sites/stuartan…
