Have fun deciphering this week's Frankston Line timetable! Each listed service may run: โ€ข Mondays โ€ข Tuesdays and Thursdays โ€ข Not Tuesdays and Thursdays โ€ข Wednesdays โ€ข Tuesdays - Thursdays โ€ข or, none of the above (Monday through Thursday)

The reason for so many variations? There are night replacement buses between Caulfield and Moorabbin Tuesday to Thursday, and additionally extra services are running Monday and Wednesday nights only to offset a Metro Tunnel closure. Three different requirements in one timetable.

Similar signal gantry at the up end of Kangaroo Flat, from the short section of double track from Bendigo into the single line section towards Ravenswood Loop
And next the home signals at Gisborne. Clear (green) normal or medium speed aspects only departing Gisborne. Trains cannot depart until the train ahead is beyond Clarkefield towards Melbourne, or beyond Woodend towards Bendigo, both around 15km or 11 minutes away.

Bonus: quite possibly the narrowest entrance to any platform here at Kangaroo Flat. This PID shows less trains in a week than most PIDless platforms in suburban Melbourne would see in a day

Automatic signals MM698 and M698 just short of Macedon on the Bendigo line. These are the first signals encountered after departing Woodend, leading into the Gisborne interlocking (slash block post...)

Bonus content: disused lever on the platform to control the preceding down signal, pedestrian gates with a >90ยฐ swing, and semaphore signal in the foliage

Another little tidbit in the Geelong timetable: three post evening peak hour services depart Waurn Ponds with six carriages, then at Geelong the train divides with the front three continuing on to Melbourne, and the rear three stable in Geelong Loco.

This occurs on 3 services: 18:42, 21:27, and 22:52. The staff at Waurn Ponds and the conductor on the train discourage passengers from boarding the rear three carriages. If you boarded the front 3 carriages you probably wouldn't even notice anything unusual at Geelong anyway.

In the current timetable, the weekday 17:09 Warrnambool service runs as six carriages down through Geelong, then splits in half at Waurn Ponds. The front half departs and leaves for Warrnambool... [thread ๐Ÿงต]

leaving the second half in the platform, which then departs shortly behind for the nearby stabling sidings. (Note the bottom green without 80 indicator, which then improved to have the 80)

However! From Friday, and every Friday henceforth, this service will not split at Waurn Ponds and instead continue on as a six car service all the way to Warrnambool. The 08:48 Saturday up service returns those extra three carriages back to Melbourne.

"We're closing early due to the public holiday" was quite confused until I saw another business mention it - the Geelong Cup
