DC doesn't need a sobering center, @MayorBowser. We need locally supported harm reduction centers. Watch this video on the first legally sanctioned overdose prevention center in the U.S.

Updates on the Stabilization Center in DC: Another case for 24/7 harm reduction centers.
We need all the support we can get, meaning that we still need safe consumption services that intentionally & effectively serve polysubstance users and people who use opioids and/or crack.

"“Punishment and stigma don’t work, but investing in health, housing, and other social services does,” @ljsislen said. “The last place a person with a substance use disorder should be at is a cell…the trauma continues to negatively impact people when they return home.”"

The drug war was never about drugs. It was about demonizing communities of color, stopping hippies from criticizing the Vietnam War, and having extra leverage for foreign interventions in Latin America.
The government lied to you. Drugs aren't the problem.
People who criticize decriminalization assume that everyone who uses drugs gets arrested.
Nope.
Law enforcement simply uses our drug laws to arrest people they have already targeted.
Drugs are de facto decriminalized for white, middle-class, housed, employed, privileged ppl.

In 2021, over 20% of the US pop aged 12+ (61.2 million) used drugs, ~1 million arrests (incl duplicates)

"All of which is to say that substance use treatment providers must never assume they know best about their clients. People are the experts on their own lives. How do we best match substance use treatment to the individual? The first step is to ask the person what they want. "
People use drugs for all types of reasons, & it’s important we use the term “substance use disorder” only when referring to a diagnosis. Each individual knows their own needs best, as harm reductionists-& people-we can’t lose sight of that. @Filtermag_org

Send a letter telling the city and federal government to stop criminalizing homelessness!
