Last week, I graduated from my PhD in Behavioural Science - marking the end of 8 years at beautiful @UniofBath ✨
I was so grateful (& emotional) to graduate with my partner and lovely friends.
Thanks to my amazing supervisors @lwhitmarsh & @DrCDemski 🤍
Over & out, Bath 🥹

Huge thanks to my co-authors - Ryan Hughes, Kaloyan Mitev, @lwhitmarsh, @DrCDemski, Nick Nash, Tris Papakonstantinou, & Mark Wilson — a dream team of qual, quant, & ML expertise.
Thanks also to @AapsCdt - without whom Ryan and I would never have begun this project! 🚀

Even as a preprint, DECOTA drew significant interest from policymakers for:
• Rapid insight in time-sensitive situations
• Scaling analysis to huge datasets
• Supporting more interpretative qual work
🧵 3/6
We compared DECOTA’s performance to human thematic analysis, using 4 sample datasets.
It identified:
• 92% of all human-coded sub-themes
• 90% of main themes
… in just 10 minutes and $0.82 per dataset 💥
🧵 2/6
DECOTA uses fine-tuned LLMs to analyse open-ended data - with no human input needed.
It outputs:
• Themes & sub-themes in the data
• Their prevalence
• How they vary by demographic group
• Example quotes
DECOTA is here! 🎉
Our automated free-text analysis tool has been published today in Psychological Methods!
DECOTA automatically analyses free-text data quickly, affordably & with human-like accuracy…

So great to see the CCC’s 7th Carbon Budget published.
It was a pleasure to contribute to this during my time in the lovely People & Business team - & see our @CAST_Centre work referenced 🌟
Importantly: 1/3 of emissions reductions will come from household behaviour change 🤯
Excited to have joined the European Climate Foundation as a Research Consultant!
ECF is an NGO working across Europe to foster #ClimateAction, & I’m looking forward to helping make sense of their public opinion data.
An exciting year ahead w/ this role & big travel plans 🌎
A huge thank you to my amazing supervisory team @lwhitmarsh & @DrCDemski for your unfaltering support always - and many other incredible people along the way 🌟

During my trip to #COP29, it was great to meet @StarkClimate - Head of Mission Control for Clean Power 2030, at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. I got to ask him about the UK’s role at COP29 and what it means for people living back home in Britain. Follow @energygovuk for more about COP29.
