Never let anyone tell you that journalism doesn't generate change.
In November I revealed that Dutch Police reports undermined West Midlands Police's justification for banning fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv from Birmingham.
I also spoke to the Mayor of Amsterdam who disputed their account of events in her city involving Maccabi fans.
Further scrutiny exposed more inaccuracies.
- Their 'intelligence' report cited a football match that never happened.
- They were forced to apologise for wrongly telling MPs that this wasn't the result of a "hallucination" by artificial intelligence.
- They also retracted claims that the Jewish community backed their decision to ban Maccabi fans.
Today, after scrutiny by journalists like myself and @Gabriel_Pogrund and the tenacity of parliamentarians like @NJ_Timothy and @LordIanAustin , some accountability has finally been taken and the chief constable has decided to leave his position early.

How can you feel OK paying a Mexican woman to be pregnant, get a C-section and express milk for a baby she doesn’t get to keep? How is this being presented as socially acceptable? thetimes.com/article/4e09e57…
Seem to be quite a lot of people wanting to downplay the seriousness of this report.
Sad!

For example: *every pupil* in a class at a Jewish school visited by the review had personally experienced antisemitism on their journey to or from school. That class is not exceptional. If this was about racist abuse towards black children, Jones would not try to downplay it.
Quite a turn of events that the Sally Rooney apologia isn’t the weirdest article published by the NS this week!
Owen Jones has, for the last three years, revealed himself to be a man of enormous courage, integrity and truthfulness. No one should think for a minute that his relentless defence of Palestinian rights and historical truth is easy or comes without heavy personal costs. Throughout the genocide in Gaza, Jones remained a tireless bur rigorous and supremely decent voice. I suspect part of what initially moved him was the strong displeasure in being treated like an idiot by the official propaganda – a noble motive in itself – but there is no question he has been genuinely touched by the images of suffering arriving daily from Gaza. And yet, how does his intellectual fixation on a battle between left and right help us understand the horrors of Gaza, or move us to stop them? My impression is that the opposite has happened. People look at what is happening in Gaza and ask themselves what a person on the right or on the left should think. In many cases this is ideology. In most, simply careerism and group association. Jones shows how limited the perspective really is. How about, like the author himself, asking how a human being should feel? How about returning to the world of facts and feelings rather than our endless Marvel franchise? newstatesman.com/culture/boo…
Not taking lectures on "connection to reality" from the chap that founded the Northern Independence Party.

Pro tip: slander works best when it has slight connection to reality, whatever this is makes absolutely no sense and makes you look, honestly, quite mad.
What an extraordinary stance by Zack Polanski, appearing to dismiss a major report on antisemitism in schools and using it as an opportunity to attack the Board of Deputies.

Channel 4 should do this and make them share a sofa
BREAKING A political row has broken out over Andy Burnham's decision to go on Channel 4’s programme ‘Gogglebox’.
A Conservative source tells me that Kemi Badenoch should be invited on to the show. One says: "It's Channel 4's job to ensure political balance."
Nigel Farage appeared on Gogglebox when he was leader of the UK Independence Party in December 2014. A spokesman for Reform UK says: "Nigel has done it before and would happily do it again."
More with me now on @GBNEWS.
You’re telling me it isn’t just about criticism of the Israeli government? 😱

There's a large Vietnamese community in France 🇫🇷. Vietnam was a French colony that was ruled more directly and for longer than Algeria in many respects.
Vietnamese kids top the French education rankings, have some of the lowest unemployment of any immigrant group, and somehow managed not to set Paris on fire.
Weird how some use “colonial trauma” as a reason to succeed and others treat it as a reason to riot
American-Egyptian activist Eman Mabrouk celebrates the riots in France: ''I think burn it all down, stop sucking European Master's dicks, liberation isn't going to be pretty, it's going to cost blood, it's going to cost lives.''
Really cool how this third world bio-weapon somehow gets a piece of paper calling her American even as she agitates for race war against white people. 70,000 Instagram likes!
Also really fucking cool that so-called ''Australian'' citizen Dr. Mo Mustafa - widely known as the "Beast from the Middle East'' - collaborated with her on this Instagram reel. He calls himself an Australian for the benefits of the passport while endorsing videos like this which call for explicit race war against Europeans.
Western immigration policy has been a catastrophe for decades, how the fuck did these people get passports when they hate us this much.

Mehdi once wrote a book about how to win an argument even when you know you’re wrong. The trick is to be manipulative and dishonest.
Mehdi has never to my knowledge talked seriously about the Israeli historical experience as he demands of me for Palestinians.
And Mehdi is accusing me of ignoring Palestinians in an interview that, though it was meant to be focused on the Israeli experience, talked a lot about Palestinians.
I’m starting to think Mehdi isn’t an entirely trustworthy guy.

One of the most absurd (not to mention offensive) comparisons I’ve seen in a very long time. Salman Rushdie was the victim of an Islamist fatwa; Sally Rooney refuses to stop using her royalties to fund a proscribed terror group.
If you ever sought out the novels of Sally Rooney in bookshops – when that was still possible – you’d know they sit in the fiction stacks adjacent to the novels of another SR whose books have been withdrawn in dastardly political circumstances. Until last week, “Rooney” and “Rushdie” had little in common beyond being shelfmates; now they have more than just a physical proximity.
@tanjil_rashid_: This is censorship by other means newstatesman.com/comment/202…
A big story on an embarrassing incident for Hackney council.
NEW: An FOI I received revealed that the Mayor of Hackney overrode officers' objections over the choice of deadline for the Mayor of Haifa's response to Hackney Council's consultation on detwinning
An initial deadline of late-October was brought to early October, and ultimately the *7th October*, after the Green Party Mayor, Zoe Garbett, made it clear she wanted to force this through as soon as possible

Imagine a foreign author says they are determined to fund an extreme far-right group which has attacked Muslim-owned businesses, communal organisations and broken into a British military base and sabotaged equipment there.
Would they get this support from luvvies and lefties?
OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

And if you really want to talk about speech-suppression, the case of the teacher in Yorkshire who has spent the last five years in hiding is a much better subject for discussion.
