It All Makes Sense Now
For those who missed the seventies, a brief note: the Village People were a gay disco act. The cop, the cowboy, the construction worker and the leather biker were not career advice. They were a joke, and everyone in New York got it.
Everyone except, it seems, the MAGA movement, which has spent a decade pumping its fists to the gayest song ever recorded while screaming about masculinity. And now the leader has developed a public fascination with men's backsides, which he discusses at rallies with the enthusiasm of a man reviewing wine.
So watch the clip. The headdress, the moustache, the chaps. Then watch the arena doing the arm moves. The macho men were never in on it. They were the punchline.
