No way to know for sure, but boy it sure looks like he used some form of PEDs for an illicit purpose and then gave a "sorry, I take full responsibility" speech while using mental health to cover up the fact he was doing so in an attempt to minimize the PR hit.
FWIW:
1: 25 games is the suspension for PED use.
2: There's almost no legitimate intersection with mental health meds and PEDs among standard treatment.
3: No legitimate physician would possibly be dumb enough to prescribe something questionable to George.
4: If he did try all alternatives except for the rare weird stuff that does end up on the PED list, he could have applied for and gotten granted a therapeutic exception.
5: George, his agent, his doctor would have all been aware of all of the above. All of whom are likely getting yearly training on these topics.
6: If it was really an innocent mistake, sure seems like it would be worth filing an appeal or naming the drug he was taking and showing it.
Only George knows for certain, but his actions and common sense would led you to believe this was not an innocent mistake, nor a guilty person coming clean, but a guilty person trying to hide what they were doing and minimize the PR hit.
FWIW, I don't give a shit about George, nor do I care all that much about PED use in basketball, but either his story is complete BS or he's one of the dumbest humans alive, hired one of the dumbest physicians alive, and has one of the dumbest agents alive, because all 3 would need to be true to have had this happen accidentally and come up with this response to the news.
Look, we all saw the news, and it’s a tough pill to swallow. 25 games is a massive blow for the Sixers and for Paul George personally 😬
But before we start tearing into him, let’s take a second to look at the "why."
Paul came out and was honest: he was trying to manage his mental health and took an improper medication while seeking help.
"Over the past few years, I've discussed the importance of mental health, and in the course of recently seeking treatment for an issue of my own, I made the mistake of taking an improper medication.
I take full responsibility for my actions and apologize to the Sixers organization, my teammates, and the Philly fans for my poor decision-making during this process", per @ESPN.
We talk a lot about how it's okay to not be okay, but that has to mean something when things get messy, too.
Being an elite athlete doesn't make you immune to the weight of the world, and sometimes the road to getting your head right has a few bumps in it.
Yeah, he messed up. He knows that, and he’s paying a $11 million price tag for it.
But if the goal was to get healthy, maybe we should lead with a little empathy instead of just frustration.
When it’s all said and done, the human being matters more than the player 🙏
