This absolutely sucks. The list of regional casualties in college hoops continues to swell.
The eligibility circus is undoubtedly damaging for the game, but losing regional rivalries and realignment has hurt the sport so much more IMO.

BREAKING: Big 5 men’s basketball schools to move forward with round-robin format without Villanova in 2027-28, from @Jeff_Neiburg in @phillysport
With the current format nearing the end of its contract, Villanova was not interested in keeping with the status quo. The one-day Big 5 Classic tripleheader could still live on.

There are two truths here as well, and we need to be candid that first and foremost, as stated above, this is a travesty and it sucks.
But what is also true is the series is simply not additive for Villanova anymore. As much as I hate the decision, I get it from Nova's perspective. Coaches want unmatched flexibility in non-con scheduling these days, and Temple/Joe's/Drexel, etc. are bigger potholes than they are potential rewards.
It's simply the sad truth about how metrics and the NET drive scheduling decisions.
No Oakland on this list is journalistic malpractice.
True road games at Michigan, Alabama, Purdue, Houston, Arkansas, Michigan State, Stanford, Arizona State and Boise State.
Team has an absolute gauntlet of a non-con.

Looking through some old schedules and found one of the more bizarre 5-game stretches for any team in college basketball history.
Name that team.
You have direct access to one of the most hallowed grounds in all of college basketball in The Palestra, and somehow you land in....Allentown!?

Wild, but true.
Since the start of 2020, Jackson State has played just ONE non-conference home game (Nov 23, 2025 v Winthrop).
Including this upcoming season, they’ll have played 74 true road games + 7 neutrals during the non-con the past seven seasons.

Did not have an Illinois/Providence rivalry on my 2026 college basketball bingo card.
But I'm here for it.
Playing a non-D1 for your opener as a P5 program is so deeply unserious.
One of the easier games to fill if you are a high major looking for a buy game, albeit usually a more expensive game too.
Need to call a spade a spade here…embarrassing look for Cal.

Insane quote.
What are we even doing here?

One member of NCAA tournament selection committee to @TheFieldOf68:
“The NCAA may not be able to threaten teams that use players deemed ineligible by the NCAA, but I can penalize them and so can other committee members if they want, whether it’s by seeding or even not including them in the field.”
Absolutely nothing could possibly go wrong here.

AJ Storr playing ball for Eric Musselman in 2040 is going to hit so hard.

Additional players that have also been granted a temporary injunction, allowing them an additional year of eligibility:
Chendall Weaver (Texas)
Jason Edwards (Providence)
AJ Storr (Ole Miss)
BJ Edwards (SMU)
Dug McDaniels (Memphis), and more
Players have the option to enter the transfer portal, if they haven't done so already.
Chaos (noun): A state of utter confusion, total lack of organization, or complete disorder.
Guy is completely out of touch with fans and needs to pick up a dictionary.

College sports are not in chaos. What Ted Cruz is calling chaos is the predictable and overdue market correction after the NCAA spent decades suppressing athlete compensation, restricting mobility, and operating as a cartel. The real instability came from the amateurism rules that courts continue to dismantle. Athletes finally have leverage. That's not chaos.
Also, programs are not going broke. They choose to pay coaches 8-figure salaries, construct lavish facilities, and run an arms race while using accounting that treats scholarships and facilities as “expenses” and then cries poverty. The same departments that claim insolvency somehow find tens of millions for the next head coach and the next weight room. Fuzzy math does not make voluntary spending a crisis that requires federal intervention.
Professional leagues have long treated college sports as a free minor-league system. The NFL and NBA in particular have avoided the full cost of player development. That does not create an obligation for Congress to now reimpose restraints on the athletes who generate the value.
Finally, Congress did not create this mess. The NCAA did. Decades of anti-competitive rules, aggressive enforcement against athletes, and refusal to adapt produced the legal losses and the patchwork of state NIL laws. The current environment is the consequence of that failure, not of congressional inaction.
The Protect College Sports Act is not a solution. It grants limited antitrust immunity to the same entities that caused the problems, imposes artificial limits on transfers that restrict athlete mobility, creates mechanisms that tilt leverage back toward schools, and preempts stronger state protections. Very little in the bill prioritizes the athletes who built the product. Passing it would not “fix” college sports. It would simply re-entrench the power structure that athletes have finally begun to challenge.
Thanks for reading my op-ed.
I'd argue the most consequential of the four opening round Maui games this year from a NCAAT resume standpoint.
Plausibly a Q1 neutral win + a likely shot at a top 5/6 team nationally (Arizona) in the semis.
Very different path for the team that loses.

UNC v Clemson is the real miss here.
Two teams likely to finish in the top 3rd of the league that won’t meet in the regular season.
