This past weekend, the Imperial Beach Fire Department hosted its largest Open House yet! It was wonderful to see so many families and community members come together to meet our local firefighters, explore the station, and learn more about the important work they do to keep our community safe. A huge thank you to all the amazing vendors, local businesses, community organizations, and volunteers who helped make this event such a success! And of course, a special thank you to our Imperial Beach firefighters for not only protecting our community but also creating opportunities like this to bring us all together! ❤️🚒

While most of the San Diego-Tijuana and Yuma regions hunkered down to wait out last weekend's heavy rainfall and fierce winds, key teams of #USIBWC employees sprang into action and headed directly into the storm while others reviewed all available forecasts and data to predict where and when danger might lie. USIBWC, tasked with the vital job of protecting the welfare of Americans along the US-Mexico border, started having planning meetings with local as well as Mexican officials’ days in advance of Tropical Storm Rachel’s landfall. Before the first rain drops fell, USIBWC operations and maintenance crews were inspecting the levees, canyon collectors, and the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant, while senior leadership coordinated with their Mexican counterparts to ensure they were doing the same with their dams. During the storm's worst fury, USIBWC staff drove up and down the border to make sure all this infrastructure was holding, ready to respond in an instant if there were any problems. Back at USIBWC Headquarters in El Paso Texas, the Water Accounting Division pored over weather reports and Tijuana River gage data, hydrologists checked gage data and monitored calls and emails. Staff was also deployed to attain measurements. Calls and emails went back and forth to Mexico, everyone seeking the answer to the critical question: How much more water is on the way? The Yuma Field Office, while deploying staff to help take measurements in the Tijuana River and assist where needed, also was busy at home. The area operations manager, in close contact with Mexican sanitation officials, immediately alerted US stakeholders upon learning rain-soaked Mexicali had started discharging a mix of sewage and stormwater into the New River. By Monday, USIBWC personnel could breathe a sigh of relief, but they didn't let their guard down. Now is the time to thoroughly inspect every inch of infrastructure to get ready for the next storm, and to take stock of lessons learned. This storm put our newly rehabilitated Junction Box (JB-1) to test. It protected our plant with no incidents. Also, the storm procedures and notification protocols worked out in advance with our Mexico counterparts were successful. The recent work completed at the canyon collectors had protected the pump stations. Also, the Mexico sediment basin at Matador Canyon protected Smuggler’s Gulch Canyon, prevented heavy sediment, rocks, and boulders, and minimized trash. Rachel challenged USIBWC, but that's par for the course for the engineers, hydrologists, scientists, and other professionals who take seriously their responsibility to protect Americans from exposure to Mexican sewage. @USIBWCCMcIntosh thanks the employees who worked around the clock to keep Americans safe and appreciates the cooperation of local agencies and Mexico during the storm.

I had the extreme pleasure of been nominated as a Woman in Leadership and hosted by Kristen Dare and Waste Management this past Friday. It was a truly moving afternoon with incredible awardees like Chelsey Gray and couldn't have asked for a better team by my side! None of us got here alone, and none of us should have to. Let's continue lifting each other up, celebrating each other's successes, and making room for the next generation of women leaders!

This past weekend I got to join our firefighters and community for the traditional fire engine push-in ceremony, welcoming a new fire engine into service! This time-honored tradition symbolizes teamwork, unity, and the proud history of the fire service. More importantly, this new engine represents an investment in public safety and ensuring our firefighters have the equipment they need to protect our residents. Thank you to the dedicated men and women of the Imperial Beach Fire Department for everything you do to keep our community safe! ❤️🚒

25 years later, we remember. 🇺🇸 Last week, the City recognized the National Day of Service and Remembrance at our City Council meeting. Today, I joined Madeline Foley to give back to the public safety officers who work every day to keep our communities safe. Thank you to CH Donuts , El Tapatio for supporting our IB firefighters and Sheriff deputies. A special thank you to Seven Mile Casino for coordinating their annual 9/11 First Responder Challenge, bringing local businesses together to provide meals to police and fire stations throughout the South Bay. It’s a meaningful way to turn remembrance into service. For me, September 11 is a reminder of what we are capable of when we stand together, serve one another, and put our differences aside. Today, we honor the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the first responders, service members, and everyday Americans who showed extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy. We honor those we lost by carrying their stories forward and remembering the courage, sacrifice, and unity that emerged from that day.

There’s no stopping community leaders with tenacity, a clear vision, and a commitment to making their community better! Yesterday, I had the honor of joining Pastor John Griffin-Atil, the Imperial Beach Neighborhood Center, and so many incredible community partners, staff, and residents to celebrate the groundbreaking of an exciting new chapter for Imperial Beach. Years of vision and hard work are becoming a reality. This project will bring a beautiful new community center to Imperial Beach, along with 50 affordable housing units for seniors, creating a place where our community can gather, connect, and thrive for generations to come. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this milestone possible. I can’t wait to see this vision come to life! 🏗️💙

September is National Preparedness Month, and preparedness in Imperial Beach begins with understanding the risks unique to our coastal community. From earthquakes and tsunamis to flooding, and power outages taking a few simple steps now can make a major difference when an emergency occurs. This month, I encourage every IB household to sign up for emergency alerts at AlertSanDiego.org, prepare an emergency kit, and create a plan that includes children, older adults, neighbors, and pets! 🆘⚠️

This past weekend, in partnership with the City of Imperial Beach, we hosted a workshop focused on investing in the future of our community, our youth! No matter what path they choose, our young people deserve the tools, resources, and confidence they need to succeed. Learning how to build a network, develop a personal brand, communicate your strengths, and make meaningful professional connections are skills that can open doors throughout their lives. A huge thank you to our community partners, staff, and incredible volunteers who gave their time and expertise on Saturday to invest in the next generation of Imperial Beach. When we give our youth the tools to succeed, we’re investing in the future of our entire community. 💙🌴
