In a 1994 interview with @Harpers, John Ehrlichman, the Watergate co-conspirator, admitted that the Nixon Administration invented the war on drugs in order to imprison Black-Americans and hippies, two groups he felt threatened by. Ehrlichman in his own words:

For the sake of better understanding the inner workings of the "mysterious Russian soul", I've compiled a long list of polls which, put together, make for a rather compelling image, one that I hope will dismiss the idea of the "silent majority of the good Russian people". 🧵

Fun fact about Kamala Harris from @politico this morning, she has her own self-chosen Chinese name instead of a phonetic translation: 賀錦麗. She chose this under the advice of a long-time Chinese-American friend who thought it would help her with Chinese voters in SF.
I have told my kids many times the President I admired the most is George Washington, for willingly let go of power so we have a republic today instead of a monarchy.
By selflessly relinquishing power Biden is now up there with the greatest of the greats. A true patriot.

NEW: analysis of millions of books published over the centuries suggests western society is shifting away from a culture of progress, and towards one of caution, worry and risk-aversion.
I think this is one of the most important challenges facing us today.

I almost exclusively listen to male thought leaders, podcasters, etc... given that I work in a male dominated industry.
But this chick really hit the nail on the head. It's not even feminism... it's just reality for women.

This is the typical pattern: the more obsessed a field is with ethics, the less ethical it is.
The campus debate on the #IsraelHamasWar is also Humanities vs. STEM + Econ.
@Columbia faculty issued two open letters, one defending and one condemning students' defense of Hamas. Here are their affiliations.

Exactly right.
This 🧵 won’t solve the defeatism pervading opinion journalism, but I hope it highlights a couple of fallacies in today’s Chronicle editorial, “Deporting Honduran migrants won’t solve S.F.’s drug crisis. The Chronicle’s investigation shows why.” (1/21)

"Let's help poor Black kids by just not teaching anyone math" is the most fucking boneheaded idea I've ever heard. Those kids are behind in math because they get less parental help. And now you're going to give them less help at school, too? Fucking brain-dead!!!
Cambridge Public Schools eliminated advanced math in middle school with the aim of reducing disparities between low-income children of color and their more affluent peers. But some families and educators argue the decision has had the opposite effect. trib.al/tXxKKPs
