Hey, I wrote this for @NGKidsBks and it's out today! It's about how things break and how people try to learn from that. Featuring sinkholes, stadium implosions, car crushers, crumbling pyramids, locust swarms, the Great Molasses Flood, and much, much more bookshop.org/a/81624/9781426…

“tailless whip scorpion” is one of the most useless names out there. it’s like naming a cat “trunkless hair elephant”

We do not deserve editors who leave little "Hahaha!" or "Love this!" comments in the doc. Like opening your packed lunch to see that your mom wrote you a tiny note. Thank you for all that you do.

Learned so much about so much working on @PopSci’s #Brilliant10 this year. Check out the winners, profiled by me & @yeahyeahyasmin, with expert guidance from @RachelFeltman & @CorinneIOZO. I don’t say it lightly, but these scientists and engineers are doing truly inspiring things

Note: I get a tiny kickback through this link, and so do indie bookstores, but buying in person or requesting from your local library are also awesome ways to go 🤓

Hot take, but sometimes, I actually like how slow biking, walking, & even transit can be. So much of our lives are about brutal, relentless efficiency & productivity, often not even for our own benefit. Going slow can be a form of resistance, and it shouldn't be a big privilege.

In case humanity really messes up, you should know we learned a dangerous species of deep sea cannibal squid is talking with each other in a kind of language ("indicative of semanticity and discreteness") using the patterns & bioluminescence on their skin. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.19…
