I used @farcaster_xyz daily for 3+ years.
I loved the people, and @dwr’s builder-first, intellectualism-second, politics-third culture.
It was refreshing at a time when the world was feeling very suffocating and dull.
I proceeded to help found a meaningful, venture funded business, which was only possible for me bc of this uniquely programmable social network.
Last year, I wrote why I thought Farcaster shared a powerful affinity with @balajis Network State movement (see quote tweet).
The move to enact this into reality by cutting some people out has alienated many people who are my friends.
But there is no doubt that it is for the sake of an ambitious, meaningful, and exciting project. And, I think, a fair one too. Because others are free to exclude people from their own opt-in communities. This may be a kind of culture can work better, especially digitally, and possibly physically.
I align with the optimistic values set out by the Network State’s opinionated social smart contract that now governs Farcaster. And, again, I believe it makes sense to at least try creating opt-in and semi-exclusive new societies.
It’s hard that some people had to get cut out for a first try at this, but I believe they can and will also make new versions of communities themselves, and can even do it on the Farcaster open protocol.
If you join Network State version of Farcaster app, come say hello to me!
I’m @ tldr there.
Farcaster as a "Network Space"
Critics of Farcaster such as @DefiIgnas misunderstand it in large part bc they are only trying to fit it into the conceptual boxes of current product categories.
It's not entirely their fault: the Farcaster team also kind of has to talk about itself using these same rigid boxes when addressing new audiences, or otherwise the message can be too hard to quickly parse.
But the truth is, Farcaster doesn't fit neatly into any boxes of previously existing things.
Because it is a New Thing.
You learn what this thing is by using it.
I am someone who has spent 1,000's of hours on Farcaster over the last few years (chatting about ideas; meeting interesting people; trying out other people's apps; building $bracky – a $10M+ appcoin).
In my opinion, what is happening within Farcaster is similar to what was happening with Starbucks at its launch. No one then understood that it wasn't primarily about the coffee, it was about having a "Third Place" outside of work and home, to do a certain kind of activity. Meet with people, use the computer, talk about ideas. Etc.
In the same way, Farcaster is not about the crypto, it's about being a digital "Third Place" where you are around people who are inspired to use programmable social and programmable currency to live, build, and interact in novel and better ways.
It is a new way of living and working together in the Internet Age.
I think this is why many of us on Farcaster are deflated to see it categorized as "just a wallet" when we know from experience that it is much, much more. And also why we are annoyed to hear that we'll "never be a social network" when outsiders compare the usage numbers with Twitter etc.
The truth is, it's something in between these two things, while also being superior to both of them in terms of quality and potentiality.
I call it a Network Space bc it is in the same direction as @balajis Network State, but without the political ambition.
If this sounds interesting, come give it a try.
I would be happy to show you around.
Dear friends, especially those who use or have used Farcaster: I need your opinions on this change. What do you think, and what are you going to do?

My 47th year was full of challenges, changes, triumphs, and achievements. It had a bit of everything: moving to a different part of the city; starting a PhD program; many new partnerships; strengthened bonds with loved ones who have been by my side for years; a solo exhibition...
Thank you so much @fx_hash_ , your team, and community! I discovered genart through you; I found an enchanting universe and met many incredible projects and artists. What was achieved at FX was truly significant and has left a mark on so many people's lives! I love you all.
To everyone, thanks for the amazing years. It seems that the fxhash platform has come to a close. The artwork, however, lives on.
The lack of communication around the wind-down is regrettable. To clarify and provide some closure:
The entire fxhash team was let go in February, except for the founder. Currently, there appears to be no attempt being made to close on the loan offered to the company (the loan was previously mentioned in a post by ciphrd).
Therefore, no current or future development is being planned. The website is now offline, and it is unclear whether it will come back.
To all the people who made fxhash possible: artists, collectors, team members, enthusiasts, supporters, partners...in short, EVERYONE who took part in the special happening that was fxhash...THANK YOU!
We shared so much together and had a truly wild code-based ride. Thankfully, @verse_works @lerandomart @objktcom are supporting the viewing & exchange of artworks published on fxhash. Mega props to them for staying true to the mission through difficult times.
And former fxhash front-end developer @maerzhase3000 has developed a framework for keeping fxhash artwork available without relying on fxhash infrastructure: whitehash.m3000.io
It's too bad things ended like this. But between the monumental trove of artwork that formed a unique creative movement and the friends we made along the way, some might say we lived it to the fullest.
The discord community is indeed still online and active if you're looking for a place to hang and talk about the good ol' days.

Not every artist picks up a brush.
@Ze_blocks wrote a system. One algorithm, one set of rules — and then let randomness do the rest. Every Pebble was born from a unique seed at the moment of mint. Irrepeatable. Fully on-chain.
This is the first thing you see walking into PEBBLES at Domínio Público — an introduction to who ZeBlocks are, and why that question matters.
Free entry. São Paulo historic center. Through July 26 → dominiopublico.nua.casa
