Hi all, We would just like to point out that “Adaptive Teaching” is a real thing and we haven’t just started using it because nobody can spell “differensiation”. Thanks x

My daughter turns 20 this week and if you’re a dad of a little girl, hold her tight, spend as much time with her as you can, and always be her hero. They grow up too fast.

The issue is that it gets to the point of exclusion in the first place. Talking about support after the event is one thing, it's the support and structure *before* that I'd argue is missing.

The response to this has been remarkable - thanks to everyone who reached out. I was particularly struck by several quite lengthy emails from former or current primary headteachers in Wales who were deeply frustrated with the "discovery" or "play-based" approach to early learning we mention in the film 🧵
I’ve spent several years investigating education in Wales. Following this week's disastrous PISA results, we've made an @itvnews special reflecting on how Wales got here. The choices that reshaped our schools, the concerns over what children learn, and the fear things could get even worse. youtube.com/watch?v=1FSIfPjX…

If a student doesn’t have a pen, don’t ‘just give them a pen’. Instead you could: -Give them a pen and take note. If it happens again, follow up with a consequence -Give them a purple pen so it’s easy to show parents days equipment isn’t right -Teach them how to locate a pen -Teach them how to pack properly for the day -Privately, ask if there are any reasons why they aren’t ready -Record any equipment issues, daily -Teach them why being organised matters. -Teach them to bring three pens a day. Don’t ’just give them a pen.’ You are not Stationery Santa. Don’t teach them to be helpless. Show them you care by teaching them to be independent.

Worth thinking about the kid whose locker stays bare. Toda et al. (2022) mapped where gamified learning backfires. Leaderboards and competitions topped the list.

I am begging Andy Burnham to read the Wolf Report. Practical education is valuable. But Key Stage 4 (aged 14-16) is too young to start sorting children into 'academic' and 'vocational' tracks. We learned this lesson in 2011 when Alison Wolf found that children from poor backgrounds were being funnelled into vocational qualifications which offered no progression on to further study and negligible employment opportunities. Meanwhile, fewer than half of pupils leave Key Stage 4 with a strong pass in both English and Maths. This is the real barrier to employment. Not that teenagers didn't study 'business' or 'creative media' at 14. Schools with a strong academic track record, and pupils with affluent parents, will avoid V Levels. They know they will soon be regarded as 'soft' by employers. But those already disadvantaged, or at underperforming schools will be pushed down a technical route. 14 year-olds who is struggling will be encouraged to take construction at GCSE rather than given extra maths tuition. The V Levels experiment will probably be phased out in a decade. But it will leave thousands of children, from the most deprived backgrounds, with a set of qualifications they cannot leverage into a job or further study.
We've all heard someone say 'school wasn't really for me’. And we should think about why that is. Our system is set up to reward young people who thrive in academic subjects and exams, but what about those who learn best by getting stuck in and doing things? Too often they're left behind. So we’re introducing new vocational GCSEs - proper, nationally recognised qualifications giving young people practical, hands-on learning that they can study alongside Maths, English and Science. And we’re creating 200,000 more work experience opportunities, so every teenager gets the chance to experience the world of work before they leave school. A one-size fits all approach simply doesn't work - I want to build an education system that values both academic and technical paths and gives all young people hope that their future will be brighter, whether it starts at university or not.

It’s really hard to achieve parity of esteem if we justify vocational education as an alternative option for those who aren’t doing well academically. Vocational education should be justified on its own merits. It should compete with academic for children who could do either.

“Move faster to solve climate challenges” ~ Prince William Yet, the Royal Family's two newly leased AgustaWestland helicopters flew 58,000 miles (420 flying hours) between February and November 2025. Prince William has taken a helicopter 47 times to Windsor and 5 (so far) to his new home, Forest Lodge - flying to multiple locations every single month - including a 40-mile flight to an event. Meanwhile, us plebs are told to only boil the exact amount of water we need in a kettle.

What students can do in a lesson isn’t the same as what they’ve learned. Learning is what survives forgetting and changes how we see the world. If we want evidence of learning, we need to look elsewhere and later. daviddidau.substack.com/p/el…
