In 1972, a group of Harlem Renaissance cultural icons gathered at Duke Ellington's house.
The afternoon was captured on 16mm film by William Greaves, but the footage remained unedited in a vault for 50 years until David Greaves restored and completed his father's project, releasing the documentary in 2026.
Once Upon a Time in Harlem is a film that every New Yorker should see — and this weekend you can, at no cost.
We partnered with the filmmakers to offer free screenings this Saturday and Sunday at the Lincoln Center, Film Forum, and Magic AMC in Harlem.

On Aug. 6, 1972, legendary filmmaker William Greaves invited roughly two dozen Harlem Renaissance luminaries to Duke Ellington’s apartment on Riverside Drive. He threw a cocktail party for the aging artists, writers and intellectuals, with an unusual request: He wanted to film their lively conversations and have several of them return the next day for one-on-one interviews.
Some of the attendees hadn't seen each other since the 1920s. Greaves ended up with 60,000 feet of 16 mm film capturing their reflections on what it was like to be part of such an influential artistic movement. He worked on the film for the remainder of his life, editing short segments and filming some additional B-roll, but died in 2014 without ever completing the project.

This is insane. We cannot allow AI agents to go into your bank account and act independently without your authorization. But that is what’s happening right now.
Left unchecked, AI could endanger the entire global financial system — including your bank account.
Pause AI NOW!
SCOOP: Major U.S. banks are detecting unauthorized third-party AI agents inside customer accounts, including some attempting to take actions that appear to be independent of user instructions, sources told Axios.
The findings have alarmed banking executives, who are racing to restrict access to their systems as AI moves at a velocity faster than financial institutions can respond, multiple industry and bank executives told Axios.
Several banks are now preparing for worst-case and even “day after” scenarios, including how to rapidly secure or restore customer accounts if things go wrong, the people said.
Several bank executives told Axios they're struggling to distinguish between human users and AI agents. One executive said banks also struggle to determine whether agents are authorized by customers or potentially operating without their permission, more akin to rogue agent behavior.

Per Axios, detected AI agents access bank accounts with the customer’s permission. This violates most banks’ terms requiring human logins, which is why banks call it “unauthorized.”
