Huge ship. Did OpenAI figure out how to offload KV to disk or block storage efficiently?
Day 16/ You can now cache for 12h in the API and for logged in users across Codex & Work we keep cache forever and you don’t have any penalty for coming back to an old conversation or resuming after a few hours and are now guaranteed to hit the cache.

I really like this attention to how friction gives life meaning, but I think it also subtly implies that reducing friction is a bad thing, or that it destroys something valuable. IMO, it's the opposite. Reducing friction gives people more freedom to choose where they want friction in their lives, and take the easy path everywhere else. After music streaming became the default, some people went back to iPods and Walkmans because they missed the feeling of listening to music. But the vast majority stuck with streaming because it really is more convenient, and they don't particularly value the friction of physical music (and the friction actually would make them listen to music less!) Basically, different people value different kinds of friction, because people differ in aesthetics and what gives them meaning. Of the nine activities in the second image, someone might love repairing clothes and hosting friends, but hate meal planning and the daily maintenance of growing food. They can now spend more time doing the former because the economy gave them a convenient way to solve the latter. I think this is an overwhelmingly good thing. We've made a lot of things easier for people, while giving them more choice over where they want to spend their time and effort. Also, having experienced the frictionless alternative actually makes people appreciate the friction they choose to keep even more, rather than it being just "the water" they exist in.
I'm fascinated by the rise of frictionmaxxing as a response to a frictionless life. We engineer away inconvenience, only to discover that some of the friction we removed was part of what made life feel alive in the first place

craziest thing is this I’m not dying to get Fable 5.5 anywhere near I was dying to get Fable 5 Opus 5.5 is just that good. IMO it’s AGI. We need a word akin to Turing test but for when people stop needing new models. not necessarily "intelligence saturation" but similar
There's absolutely no pressure to release Fable 5.5. Nobody, and I mean absolutely NOBODY, has even come close to challenging Opus 5.5 so far. The only reason to launch Fable 5.5 anytime soon would be the IPO.

Zero brain activity went into the writing of this headline. Crazy that even the WSJ has fallen to mindless cynicism.

SAD!
Today I signed the data center moratorium legislation.    San Francisco is the national leader in innovation, and that innovation is one important driver of our city’s recovery. We can never take that position for granted. As our city recovers, our administration is working to deliver a recovery that reaches every family and truly supports our communities.   Over the next 45 days, alongside departments and the Board of Supervisors, we will continue the work our administration has already started to develop a thoughtful, responsible framework that allows for the technology infrastructure our hospitals, office buildings, academic institutions, and government rely on while prioritizing community needs, keeping electricity rates low, and protecting the clean water and air our residents deserve.

wild to me that people are asking what the point of the flying tesla is and saying it's not practical that's like asking what the point of art is. the point is that it's awesome and humanity did something sick

jesus nobody is doing it like Elon rn fr
JUST IN: Elon Musk unveils the Tesla Roadster by launching it off a ramp before the car flipped in midair and safely landed on the ground. The car is a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX. One of the most insane things I've ever seen.

This is strange signaling. I love the energy but it implies that they feel behind and need to do highly visible pushes to catch up in attention. And it feeds the reset dependence and attract the wrong type of users. OTOH, Opus 5.5 is beyond incredible so maybe it’s necessary

good, that means someone will find the right product formula that clicks with people (many problems are a semi-coordinated global collaborative/competitive optimization effort to find the right permutation that produces the best function and vibe match)
Everyone. is. building. the. same. thing.

holy
Claude Sonnet 5.5 scores 56 on Artificial Analysis' Intelligence Index. That puts it behind only Claude Opus 5.5, above GPT-6 Astra and miles above GPT-6 Sol. Pretty nuts.

Opus 5.5 is my favorite model yet So many engineers on my team saying how much they like it I've been using it for projects all day and it's incredibly capable, basically one-shots most things, and it sips usage... incredibly efficient Monumental vibe shift from Fable anxiety

the pace of stuff is whiplash inducing. not long ago was plan mode the gold standard best practice for serious agentic coding
we’re thinking of killing plan mode and using the shift+tab hotkey to adjust effort levels I don’t think the models need plan mode anymore, but if you’re a plan mode diehard would love to get your feedback on why

a tweet like this describing this in such detail, even jokingly, would only be posted in a low trust society
Hello computer, Find every Amazon purchase I ever made. Call the number of the manufacturer. Say you’re not satisfied. Request a refund. If they decline, threaten to leave a bad review. If they decline, find the CEO’s phone number and ask him for a refund. Now, repeat the same process for items I never even purchased and see if you can get them to send me money. If they ask for a recipient, generate an image of one and send that. Do not stop until you’ve collected $1 million in refunds.

these costs have gotten truly insane
My project manager came into my office this morning to tell me she’s stepping down to become a stay-at-home mom. She makes $68,000 a year. Her husband earns $72,000. They just had their second child, so she called licensed local daycare centers to get quotes for an infant and a toddler. Average cost: $2,650 a month. That’s $31,800 every year straight out of their post-tax income. After federal taxes, state taxes, and healthcare deductions, her take-home pay was roughly $3,700 a month. After paying $2,650 for daycare, she was working 40 hours a week to net $1,050 a month…..or about $6.50 an hour. She looked at me and said: "I’m literally spending 160 hours a month away from my kids just to clear $250 a week after childcare costs." We didn't just build an expensive economy. We built a system where holding down a mid-class job as a second earner costs more than staying home.
