The truth about climate change, in one thread. Actual science
A CLIMATE CHANGE RECAP THREAD, OR WHY IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CO2. 1: We are in the modern warming period, due to the Solar Cycles called Bray-Halstatt & Eddy. Temperatures are EXPECTED TO INCREASE in this period. Easily understood from this graph:

Interesting absence of refugees too, but lots of virtue signalling women
Davina McCall & other fabulous sorts at a party for Choose Love, a charity that posts messages such as ā€œREFUGEES WELCOME HEREā€ and ā€œChoose Love over hate. Stand with refugees.ā€ McCall et al are promoting a jewellery collection to raise funds for Choose Love. Luxury beliefs much!

Imagine if these idiots and their fellow travellers in the Tory Party hadn't been so down on exploration and use of the North sea for a decade or more, imagine where we would be then. We are on the edge of calamity and we no longer have the luxury of idocy.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham and John Healey are set to force the approval of Rosebank despite the Energy Secretary's reluctance Minister: "Both Andy and John have decided Rosebank needs to go ahead. The economic and energy security case is so strong" [@DPJHodges]

The idea that this chap was an economist with the Treasury and the DWP chills the blood.
Nope, that’s not how taxes and price works. The price is determined by demand and supply. Companies charge the highest price they can given demand. A tax levied on *profits* does not affect a company’s cost ie supply. Taxes on *windfall* profits (like oil and gas) are the most efficient kind of tax there is.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Corporate profit taxes do not directly shift marginal costs but empirical studies show partial pass-through into higher consumer prices. Windfall taxes on oil and gas have deterred investment and production in practice despite theoretical efficiency on rents. dadun.unav.edu/server/api/cor… ecb.europa.eu/pub/pdf/scpwps… taxfoundation.org/blog/big-oil-p… scottishfinancialreview.com/2025/09/03/win…

Fair point about think-tank 'alternative Budget' proposing spending cuts being ignored by legacy media. Contrasts this with coverage of IEA effort. A more dramatic contrast is with media sycophancy toward the Resolution Foundation. If anyone there farts it leads News at Ten
On Friday, GBTT published an alternative Budget: a £150 billion programme of spending reform paying for £97 billion of tax cuts. It's the kind of radical thinking Britain needs after years of failed economic policy and status quo thinking. Mainstream coverage so far: zero. Last week the IEA's alternative Budget was on every news channel, in every paper and all over the web. We're sure its pure coincidence our's hasn't had a single mention on TV, in print or online. With £3 trillion of debt and £110 billion a year of debt interest, why is £150 billion of radical reform on spending not worth a single line?

So Andy Burnham wants an ā€œhonest conversationā€ about restoring free movement? Fine! In 2024 alone, 1,177,232 people acquired EU-country citizenship, 88% were from non-EU countries. Over the decade to 2024: around 8.4 MILLION citizenship acquisitions. So @AndyBurnhamGM, here’s the honest question: Why should an EU government be able to confer a right to live in Britain that the British Government cannot refuse? Brexit returned that sovereign decision to Britain. And now you want to surrender it again.
A reminder of what Burnham said in May: "I am not proposing that the UK considers rejoining the EU, I respect the decision that was made at the referendum." Now he wants an "honest" conversation about the EU after he lied? You can’t trust a word he says.

The Home Office assumed that between 3.5m and 4.1m European migrants would settle in Britain after Brexit. 5.8million people currently hold settled or pre-settled status. Freedom of movement would make controlling our borders impossible. migrationcentral.co.uk/p/hom…

The FT of course has pushed for more borrowing, spending and welfare for the past 12 years
Britain needs ā€˜chainsaw economics’. My latest column for @FT. Shock therapy can liberate the UK economy from a cycle of low growth, rising debt and an expanding state: as.ft.com/r/963776ad-73b3-4b…

Given the colour choice, surely awareness of Leprechaunism, not Dwarfism, is being celebrated here...

Susan on her continuing 'making an arse of herself with hot London dinner party gotchas' world tour. – at Midhurst, England
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon mocks The Economist during a tense exchange after being told he’s sounding like Trump: ā€œI’m not Trumpian. I’m factual.ā€ šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø Interviewer: ā€œYou’re sounding Trumpy.ā€ Jamie Dimon: ā€œI’m not Trumpian. I’m factual. I don’t agree with this binary shit that goes on all the time. I think The Economist is the absolute best, most admirable thing in the world, and you should continue that.ā€ Dimon delivers the last line with apparent sarcasm, poking fun at the publication while pushing back against the idea that agreeing with Trump on certain issues makes him a Trump supporter.

This is just moronic. To protect our own refineries (which we should have done ages ago) we just need to remove carbon taxes on our own refineries. Not add extra costs that will come through as higher prices for everyone. And while we’re at it also reduce fuel duties to really get prices lower.
John Healey is considering imposing a ā€˜carbon charge’ on imported fuel like petrol and diesel in the Budget. The Labour government are a bunch of economic illiterates. All that this will do is increase further costs for the British motorist during a cost of living crisis.

Just remember this. When Labour say "free movement" we're not talking about hardworking Polish plumbers anymore. We're talking about the 1 million illegals who Spain's Pedro SƔnchez just put on a fast-track to citizenship. They will head straight to the UK.

I understand why people are taking a second look at the Tories given the mess Reform is in, but you have to listen carefully to what Badenoch says. She thinks the disintegrating social fabric can be repaired with managerial tinkering. She ultimately thinks it's a integration problem - and an institutional problem (fixing the police, the schools and the operating assumptions of authorities). While these are all changes that need to happen, they needed to happen at least ten years ago - but there's no integrating the Boriswave. Most of it is garbage immigration that can only be a net drain. The policies Badenoch has thus far backed only go some of the way. Ending ILR is essential, as is deporting illegals and removing benefits, but the policy has to be an active policy of complete Boriswave reversal. On that score, for Badenoch to be convincing, she ought to be showing as much contempt for the Tories who enabled the Boriswave as she does Reform. This where the Tory party itself becomes the main barrier. Shabana Mahmood has faced opposition from her back benchers on marginal ILR reforms - but there's no reason to expect the Tory party will be any different. They all spout the same bullshit rhetoric about "fairness" and "British values", and Tories almost certainly will seek carve-outs for care workers on the same basis. The exception becomes the loophole. Without an unequivocal recognition that the Boriswave was a historic error in need of urgent correction, the Tory party is just another managed decline option. Same destination, slower speed.

An Islamist ISIS terrorist who plotted to kidnap a British ambassador ā€˜smuggled himself into the UK on back of lorry’ in Dover. Zana Rahim was only later found due to a chance traffic stop. The illegal migration crisis is a national emergency. Yet Labour allow more to come.

If it's as reported, the 'quadruple lock' creates a new and nasty cliff edge in the tax system. If you earn £1 extra as a pensioner, you'll get taxed on the proportion of the state pension above the income tax threshold (currently £466). So £1 in earnings -> £93 in tax.

Andy Burnham wants to reopen the debate on EU free movement. Meanwhile, Britain has 981,000 young people not in employment, education or training. Nearly ONE MILLION young people. Shouldn't we be focusing on getting them into work, improving skills and creating opportunities before looking abroad for more workers? Our young people deserve a chance.

Actual facts
FYI, talking about Brexit yesterday, Angela Rayner claimed that... ā€œThe evidence is really clear in terms of 20% down in exports to the EU, 16,000 businesses no longer exporting to the EU, it has been the red tape on the EU deal we got, has been damaging to the economyā€. But if this is indeed the evidence, it really is not clear! Let's unpick it... 🧵
