this just shows that reading is a hobby for these people (pathetic!!!!) rather than a critical psychic defense originating in childhood and used to numb unbearable pain xitter.cf/DylanoA4/status/211075…
I saw of video of Ethan Hawke lamenting how he's not reading half as much as he once did. This is a much deeper and darker pattern. Some of the most avid readers I know, lifelong readers, have basically stopped. They hate it and can't even explain it, the fire's just gone out

whenever I hear of a guy with an identical or near-identical first and last name I want to ring the parents and shout at them. Pete Peterson. Donald McDonald. Thomas Thompson. what the fuck were you thinking

unfortunately this is real, there is a widespread and really intense anxiety among many parents my age around exercising any authority over their kids at all, even if the issue at hand (sleep, eating, toileting, screens) has become totally unbearable for the whole family
there is a real crisis amongst millennial parents who are so terrified of inadvertently traumatizing their kids that they refuse to do anything akin to parenting lest it come across as authoritarian

I sympathise with this, I often think about how much easier parenting would be if our complex and demanding society didn’t require you to force your children to learn so many things in order to be functioning adults. you can’t really let them go at their own pace

but when you elect to become a parent this is what you are signing up for, so you have to assimilate it somehow. one of many reasons the birth rate is going down

funniest ever instance of a poorly-educated naive physicalist completely unable to understand why someone might disagree with them. many such cases!
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious. Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm. For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

Yeah because you don't understand what the Zinger box means to the ordinary Australian. If you are not engaged with that culture then it just shows how you alienated from the soil you stand on. Just leave already and go to Qatar where you belong.

unless you’re doing proper research for some specific purpose, who cares. reading good books makes you smart and interesting through diffuse processes and that’s the important thing
it’s insane how you basically have to reread any given book once every two years to rly have the slightest idea wtf you’re talking about

“post economic” is the funniest euphemism for rich that I’ve ever seen, good luck to this diva
wrote out a list of who I’m looking for. X, work your magic. non negotiable - 35 to 42 y/o - healthy masculine - smart, funny, lighthearted - provider/protector mentality - post economic (still hardworking) - must be kind, generous, thoughtful - no kids yet, decidedly wants kids - on the healing path (history of serious commitment ex therapists, books, retreats) - can meet anywhere but will not date unless live in the same city - fit and sober because you care about your health strongly preferred - no prev marriages or engagements - works in tech (comfortable with risk and career is blended into personal life)
