End the Discrimination and Bias Faced by Women and Girls of African Descent
Women and girls of African descent continue to face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination globally, rooted in historical injustices such as slavery, colonialism, and structural racism. These systemic inequalities manifest in economic marginalization, gender-based violence, limited access to healthcare and education, and underrepresentation in political and public life. The intersection of racial and gender discrimination places them at a unique disadvantage, with harmful stereotypes and prejudices influencing social norms, institutional policies, and everyday interactions. Bias and discrimination persists across the Americas, Europe, Asia and even in Africa.
The UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent has noted that anti-Black racism disproportionately impacts women and girls through invisibilization, over-sexualization, and lack of institutional redress. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the UN International Decade for People of African Descent (2015–2024) call for targeted interventions to promote justice, development, and recognition.
To dismantle these inequities, states must adopt intersectional frameworks in policy, ensure representation of Afro-descendant women in decision-making spaces, and enforce laws that address both racial and gender discrimination. Reparatory justice, inclusive education, and community leadership are essential for systemic transformation.
