Somehow we've reached a point in education where: - teaching kids explicitly is controversial - academic rigour is treated as a threat to student wellbeing - memorizing math facts is discouraged or considered unnecessary - practice is dismissed as "drill and kill" Low expectations are not kindness, and nothing hurts someone's confidence more than falling further behind every year.

This is why calculus should be a requirement for high school. Imagine if we only learned other subjects up until the 1600s and stopped because we believed it was "too hard" for students to grasp.
Once you learn calculus, you've caught up to what was the cutting edge of math in 1687.

Your students remember how to factor polynomials?! Wow, they're ahead!
I swear most students take four years of math in high school and only remember how to factor polynomials and even then

With all the AI slop proofs coming out, this genuine human effort makes me happy. This is real mathematics.
The largest math proof in human history is now computer-verified. Today, Axiom announces a complete Lean auto-formalization of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups, the "periodic table of symmetry." About 15,000 pages, built by over 100 mathematicians across generations.

Currently dealing with this right now... this might be the only way to go.
JUST IN: UC Berkeley math professor stops grading homework for correctness, saying widespread AI use has made it "pointless," and now awards credit simply for turning in assignments.

Actually math is hard because the concepts are really complex.
Math isn't hard because the concepts are complex. It's hard because traditional education treats it like robotic symbol-shuffling gymnastics. We force people to memorize formulas for years while completely hiding the underlying spatial intuition.

So, in looking at topics in Analytic Theology, I found there is a whole genre called "The Logical Problem of the Trinity" (LPT) where many authors admit the Trinity makes no sense in formal logic, and some try to square that circle. New research area unlocked!

I have heard many say Apostolic Pentecostals are not academic. That they don't engage in scholarship. I will never listen to those arguments again. Thank you to @UrshanGrad for hosting a great Symposium! It was great to meet @mydocjackson and @ClaytonJKillion in person!

Today, on what would have been his 33rd birthday, our Nation honors the loving memory of Charlie Kirk - a father, husband, Christian martyr, & titan of the conservative movement. We renew our resolve to always defend our principles of truth, faith, & the open exchange of ideas.

Says normal theological statement... Goes viral. Trinitarian fragility is real.
I will never be convinced of the trinity doctrine. There's just too much in it that isn't in Scripture.

I like Weinstein. But he posts this crap to his normy audience that doesn't know a thing about mathematical research or how it works. So they can say, "Yes, so true! I knew it!" Embarrassing.
Remember what I have been telling you: When adequate support dried up decades ago, Mathematicians and more so Physicists became a club where the senior members deliberately slowed down the pace of progress of all our research to match the pace and direction of their club.

This would actually be hilarious if proven true. They try to solve a Millennium Problem foe clout and then their formalization is wrong. God, please let this happen because it would be so funny.

People seem excited about this. Idk, I think this is horrible. There is nothing poetic about coldly releasing hundreds of solutions to problems that could have been inspiring stories (e.g., Andrew Wiles). Using AI is fine; turning maths into a race won with concentrated resources is disgusting.
We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results. github.com/openai/math

If I posted a horribly written paper claiming to solve a big problem (Lean certificate and all) while giving no credit and never engaging the community working on it, I’d be considered an academic sociopath. Keep it up and I’d be isolated. AI companies are doing that at scale.

People don't understand how long it takes even professional mathematicians to read research level mathematics. Papers aren't novels you skim through. They are dense and reading them is work. That's why these AI proof dumps are irresponsible.
The old joke was that Collatz was a Soviet plot to stop US mathematics: it would infect people's minds and they would drop everything and work on nothing else. I'm starting to feel that way about AI. I'm still digging through the positive proportion of Collatz result, and now I have to drop that and start reading quasi-RH. But just when I start making progress on that, they'll drop something else even more impactful. So I'll never actually finish reading/digesting anything?!? :(
