Don’t have to tell me. I said to BUY Drake Maye stock AFTER the Jags loss. @CutonDime25 agreed. Can see for yourself on Game Over (Spotify and Netflix)

Jim Deshaies, Mike Morgan, Tim Burke, Jay Howell, Bob Tewksbury, and others who were no longer prospects, but would have helped them going forward (Dennis Rasmussen, Shane Rawley)

This is a good point; you have to take the good with the bad. Steinbrenner is overrated, but on whole he was better than many.

Billy Martin insisted on trading for Rickey, who is one of my all-time favorites. The price was Jose Rijo, Jay Howell and others. Eventually the Yankees lack of pitching(!) meant they couldn’t compete and Rickey forced a trade for much less than they gave up for him
Almost every move Steinbrenner made in the 1980s was idiotic, and known to be idiotic at the time he made them.

George was a win now guy. Especially with the Mets and Red Sox 80s success. So he wanted the quick fix & traded the farm system. They were the winningest team in the 80s. They did obtain high impact offensive players like clark, Kittle, Griffey, Baylor & Washington to name a few
This is true. George was ahead of the curve signing free agents. Then, like Jerry Jones, the league caught up to him, and he stopped winning. And his impatience led to trading all of the best pitching prospects away.

Yanks don’t win the 77 and 78 championships without Reggie, Goose, Catfish, Torrez all free agents when no one was signing free agents

Steinbrenner was suspended from baseball in 1990, so the Yankees were able to keep their prospects because they weren’t stupidly traded away. The 2000s should’ve been better, but Cashman made several obvious blunders, and George got a little cheap right when they needed to spend
When he stepped back things got better. But every time he meddled they got worse again. Loved Sheffield, but instead of Guerrero? Not willing to pay Carlos Beltran. Cashman mishandled the transitional period after 2001, but George gets outsized credit he does not deserve.

That’s fine Max. But I’m sure you’re nuanced enough to take the whole picture and to even allow the evolution from that George (we all hated) and the 1993-2010 one.
Not true. George Steinbrenner colluded with other owners in the mid 80s and did NOT sign available free agents that would’ve put the Yankees over the top. Jack Morris, Carlton Fisk, Andre Dawson et al.

When a blue chip is available you have to be willing to spend money, prospects, whatever it takes. Mookie Betts, Bryce Harper, Gerrit Cole (back when). Cashman never wants to do the painful thing. He specializes in getting good, undervalued assets on the cheap.

You’re right about Rutschman not being worth the package Boston gave up. The point about Wells stands. He hit .182 for the season, and made one of the worst postseason base running blunders of recent years (and then defended it later!). Catcher is a position that must be improved

Yankees fans don’t realize is that if this was ruled a catch it would have prevented Red Sox pitchers from surrendering 16 runs today

Unbelievable dominance.

Bernie Williams had the equivalent of nearly an entire extra season of baseball in postseason play… and he was great during it! He had another 22 HR, 80 RBI, and .850 OPS against the best opponents in the biggest moments. Easily belongs in Cooperstown.

Oct play shouldn’t be just extra credit, it’s part of the actual resume. These are the most important games! Yes, it’s a small sample size, but championships are determined on small sample size. Reward players that took advantage of these huge important moments.
