More than the science fiction rocket ships 🚀 I read about as a kid, William Gibson novels gave me the first real sense of how the world could change. Not apocalyptic, not nirvana, but genuinely 'different'.

The successive transition from one paradigm to another via revolution is the usual developmental pattern of mature science.

Reactionary Ideas (Whack-a-Mole) – There is a popular arcade game where players are given a big rubber mallet, which they use to smack little gophers that randomly poke their head up. It’s a game that rewards quick reflexes. See a gopher, whack it with the mallet.
Ultimately, lots and lots of action doesn’t translate into strategic change. Instead, the game of smacking the gophers continues, producing a never-ending stream of small disconnected innovations that only deliver short term impact, if they can scale at all.
