I went to San Francisco and wrote about tasteslop, AI alignment, the spoils of the apocalypse, microcelebrity nerd courtesans, torturing rationalists at their commune hype house, races of the future, corgi cafe, and naturalizing the hierarchies that machines spit back at us

I’m a lifelong Trotskyist and this is the first time I’ve never voted for any Republicans.
Fascinated by this passage, Alan Knight‘s atomic metaphor arguing against marxist (et al) historiography of the mexican revolution
Everything I have to say about the uprisings in France has already been said by Hölderlin but follow @MarlonEttinger for the on the ground reporting about it

Whats great abt his role is that essentially it’s a deceptive meritocratic lib whitewashing (the “sane guy in the room”) of a cientifico who was probably just as monstrous as the rest of the regime the play-within-a-play is satirizing
teapaw.org/mcrumps/status/2106824… also, once the discourse eventually catches up, ppl will prob talk abt the film wrt Children of Men more than to Eddington or OBAA (so the Cuaron defense here is apt), ie the film is like Children of Men seen thru the movie the ppl in its world would watch
Digger was brilliant, somehow Cuaron manages not to oversell it here even with this outrageous ChatGPT comparison to Antonioni and DW Griffith

The statue of Prometheus is finally finished.
It was cast in Paris, crossed the Atlantic, and was assembled at Starbase. It took us 100 days to go from nothing to this.
People of the West, we have lived through an era devoid of dreams, devoid of destiny.
But the time has come to reclaim our dream of antiquity.
In a few months, we will start building a new city. It will be the most magnificent city in all of history.
After all, the great dream of the West has always been to rebuild Rome.
Come walk beside us in this endeavor. The world is waiting.

laughed out loud at the bit in Tristram Shandy where the book completely skips a chapter and the narrator explains that he took it out because he wrote it so beautifully that it would have made the rest of the book look worse, therefore the book is even more perfect without it

it’s insane how you basically have to reread any given book once every two years to rly have the slightest idea wtf you’re talking about
My hunch is if traditional media outlets want to survive, they need to lean much more heavily on local "slice of life" stories. With the internet, we don't need local papers to analyze global events as much anymore. What we need are well reported stories from our own backyards.

The internet archive link to his art show genuinely has me checking the locks and getting spooked walking down the sidewalk. The plot of a distant star kinda btw.
