Semantic Decomposition of Question and SQL for Text-to-SQL Parsing (#EMNLP2023 Findings)
arxiv.org/abs/2310.13575
Text-to-SQL still struggles on complex SQL queries (54-63% acc. really not great :-( )
This paper addresses this lack of compositionality.

🚨 [Token][ization] Paper Alert 🚨
Tokenization is a wildly understudied area of language modeling despite it having effects across all of NLP. Over the past ~8 months, 32 (!) tokenizer researchers put together the most comprehensive survey of the field. Check it out!

You have your token vocabulary, now you have to use the same tokenization inference mechanism for pre-training and using an LLM as was used in building the vocab, right? WRONG.

Very sad to hear. 😥 He made many enormous contributions to the field of computing. Pascal was the first language I used seriously (initially on the UCSD p-System and later via Turbo Pascal), and I got my hands on this great book that he wrote when I was in middle school.
I also love the anecdote when asked about how to pronounce his name:
"Whereas Europeans generally pronounce my name the right way ('Ni-klows Wirt'), Americans invariably mangle it into 'Nick-les Worth'. This is to say that Europeans call me by name, but Americans call me by value.
Niklaus Wirth"

Simmons Institute is doing a great job - great talks on a wonderful topic, I have learned a lot – at Israel
This quoted post is unavailable.
My way of dealing with hurricane of bad news is:
- I do not know about statistical validity (the sample size looks sufficient but war conditions make it hard to run reliable data collection)
- Sentiment during war dominates and is no indication of long term position – at Israel
Extremely interesting analysis of unanswerable questions and LLMs – at Israel
🎉Excited to announce our paper's acceptance at #EMNLP2023! We explore a fascinating question: When faced with (un)answerable queries, do LLMs actually grasp the concept of (un)answerability?🧐 This work is a collaborative effort with @clu_avi @ravfogel @omerNLP and Ido Dagan 1/n
