Here's one for @meredithmartin - the feds are putting $20 million for better housing-related data.

The Ford government knew there was a scam going on with OSAP at a handful of career colleges. Instead of stopping it, they cut funds to all students. Now they've frozen OSAP for private career colleges that had nothing to do with the fraud. The knew it. They chose not to act.

Old Age Security isn’t a pension fund. Today’s workers and taxpayers fund benefits for today’s seniors. @SabrinaMaddeaux and @MikePMoffatt explain why that matters in today’s episode.

Here's the full episode where @SabrinaMaddeaux & @MikePMoffatt discuss why political promises to give "more money to seniors" actually enrich Canada's wealthiest demographic & how taking money from young workers is quietly hurting the economy. Check it: youtu.be/iCrKQxhvnEc

Overriding local decisions that allow for more housing supply makes zero sense. Watching a conservative government add heavy regulation to free-market housing supply is simply mind-boggling.

Serious Question: We live in a world in increasing wealth inequality and therefore everything is becoming zero sum resulting in massive political polarization. The vast majority of the wealth being generated by AI is going to the very top.

AI is iterating rapidly and will possibly be able to replace many jobs that currently require human intelligence. In this world all that’s left is manual labour but the owners of the robot overlords have a surplus of labourers so wages are very low.

Most people have a lot of free time and no money. What do they do? A) Bask in the glory of all the free time while barely having enough to eat? B) Work together to find an equitable balance of labour and capital? C) Kill the owners of the robot overlords?

An editor from The Globe reached out to my dad to write this obit a little while ago and bc my dad is a capitalist he asked about remuneration. $300, said the editor, but you don’t get it until the person dies. Dad: What if I die first? Pregnant pause

These Committees need more oversight or should be abolished entirely. They’re made up of unqualified, unelected people who continually overstep their mandate, and there’s zero accountability.
The Committee of Adjustment process in Toronto is only as good as its members, and in Scarborough, it's a disgrace. Every once in a while, a friend will text me to check out a recent hearing on YouTube. Today, it was for a six-storey apartment building proposed at 978 Pharmacy Ave., which is designated as a Major Street. As longtime followers will know, the City recently upzoned Major Streets to allow apartment buildings up to six storeys. This proposal is on a constrained lot and required seven minor variances, which is typical. The variances were as follows: 1. Reduction in minimum front yard setback from 7.5m to 5.6m 2. Two dwelling units below established grade (though not actually below grade, due to the sloping lot) 3. Front-facing balconies encroaching into the front yard setback by 3.4m (1.5m is permitted) 4. Reduction in the required side yard soft landscaping strip from 1.5m to 0.4m (to accommodate a 1.1m walkway) 5. A visitor parking space in the front yard 6. A visitor parking space 0.0m from the main wall (3.0m is required) 7. Reduction in aisle width for bicycle parking from 2.5m to 1.8m Let's set aside, for now, how insanely and unreasonably prescriptive our zoning bylaw is. The Committee is mandated to review these variances against the four tests. Its mandate is not to question City policy allowing midrise buildings on Major Streets. If you want to see how it went, you can watch here from 1:10:30 to 2:50:27: youtube.com/live/dtWPoxZzpkM… Total shit show. I want to highlight seven short clips.

Spoiler for an upcoming report. Although newcomers to Canada disproportionately settled in cities, Toronto's share of Ontario births actually fell during the immigration boom years, as the City priced out middle-class families.

Myth-busting episode! "Just build new metros" is a common proposal for the housing crisis. But Canada already has more metros than similar countries, and the history of newtowns from Ontario's Townsend and Australia's Monarto, is poor. Watch here: youtube.com/watch?v=VOZW--eR…

Yeah I love this idea too but then I’d have to give all my personal info to a company that doesn’t give a shit about safety and is run by a colossal douchbag so I guess I’ll just have to keep on keeping on
I love this framing ... I wish I'd thought of it, even if I think I would have chickened out on putting this way, even if it had occurred to me. IOW: Task-specific agents are like husbands: They do what you ask around the house *if* you ask, and they'll get stuff done only when you make a tidy and legible list for them. The next generation of agents need to be more like wives: Ingest user's entire professional and personal life and do all the essential invisible labor, including thinking of ways to help that weren't explicitly requested
