Even in your own wallet, USDT and USDC can be frozen by their issuers. CZ is thanking Tether and Circle for freezing funds after a suspected Binance hack. That power can stop a thief. Holding your own keys doesn’t remove your dependence on the issuer.

Your car app says you're not enrolled in driving-data tracking. But your data is being sold anyway. That's what state investigators say happened to more than 370,000 GM drivers. Their data reached brokers and insurers. GM agreed today to pay $220 million to settle the allegations.

A civilization could go extinct and still be exploring the galaxy millions of years later. That’s the fascinating thing about von Neumann probes. One machine reaches another star, builds copies of itself, and sends them onward. If that’s physically possible, the interesting question isn’t just whether humanity will build one. It’s why we haven’t seen anyone else’s yet.

Earlier this week, I asked Elisha Wiesel what Berlin's political leaders should be willing to sacrifice to protect Jewish life. “They should be willing to sacrifice their governing coalitions,” he told me. Today, Der Spiegel reported that Elif Eralp, who wants to become Berlin's next mayor, tried to remove a question from an interview because she feared for her family's safety. The question concerned a man who had praised Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader behind the October 7 massacre in Israel. The same man had attended an election-night gathering of Eralp's Left Party in Berlin. The report does not say he personally threatened her. I take her fears seriously. But the Left Party, Greens, and Social Democrats have just promised to protect Jewish life in Berlin. If a politician seeking to lead Germany's capital is afraid to publicly discuss someone who praised a Hamas leader, I want to know what protection ordinary Jewish Berliners can expect. And I want to know what those three parties are prepared to do when protecting Jewish life comes at a political cost.

No single company is planning for this. Each one just thinks about its own costs. One company replacing workers with AI still has customers who work elsewhere. But if every company does it, there are fewer paychecks out there to buy anything. Nobody has a settled answer yet, which is why people keep asking.

VW’s European EV orders rose 39% in the first nine months of 2026. EVs made up about 40% of its European order bank at the end of September. Yet VW says lower-margin EVs, China and pricing pressure weighed on earnings. More demand doesn’t automatically fund what comes next.

Why does it suddenly seem like governments everywhere are telling people to stock up? I checked the dates. 🇪🇺 EU: Preparedness strategy, including a 72-hour self-sufficiency goal, announced in March 2025. 🇳🇴 Norway: Annual preparedness week. This year’s theme was already documented on January 16. 🇧🇪 Belgium: Four-year preparedness campaign launched in April 2026. 🇬🇧 UK: Campaign plans outlined July 14. Launch repeatedly delayed before finally going live October 22. 🇯🇵 Japan: New disaster management agency opens November 2. The law was enacted in July. Some of these efforts explicitly address sabotage, cyberattacks and war, not just natural disasters. That’s worth examining. But the timing alone isn’t evidence of a single imminent crisis. Governments didn’t suddenly start preparing. Plans made at different times are now attracting public attention at the same time. That’s an important distinction.

Putin called Elon Musk “a real genius” today, while touring an exhibition at the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow where he was shown Russia’s Starlink rival, Rassvet. He then said Russia is in close contact with American partners, including Musk, so that satellites in orbit don’t interfere with each other.

An Israeli embassy in Europe has been targeted again. A knife-wielding attacker assaulted a police officer guarding Israel's embassy in Belgrade overnight. The officer was wounded and shot the attacker dead. Serbian authorities are investigating the incident as terrorism and say the attacker supported ISIS. In June 2024, another officer was wounded in an attack at the same embassy. Two attacks on the same diplomatic mission in little more than two years. That's a disturbing reminder of the danger faced by the people assigned to protect it.
