Before building this, I studied the best date pickers out there. Here's where each fell short for me: #1 @AirbnbEng (range) - Selected hover state is not visible - Range dates hover is not visible - Flickers on the second date selected - No dark mode #2 @NotionCalendar - Doesn't show date range case - Some text misalignment (fixed since reported yesterday) - Too much padding left on the week number for optical alignment - Previously selected time should appear centered in the dropdown - No scroll-fade effect on dropdown - No subtle animation on month change - No light mode #3 @shadcn - Unclear behavior on which date I'm editing after an initial selection - Glitch on the border around selected date - Disrupting selected hover state - No hover I could go on.. Calendar design is hard and I've designed on top of these giants shoulders. Thanks to these teams for clearing the path. Let's continue to be picky!

Detail #1: The fluid hover follows your cursor making it feel more reactive and alive. Detail #2: All hover and pressed state are clearly visible from each others Detail #3: When you select another range, the previous range slightly fades away

1,000 stars. I woke up to Fluid Functionalism hitting 1,000 stars on GitHub, so here are a few thoughts. It started in February with an X challenge: post consistently, and build components to post about. I picked two to experiment with, a Dropdown and Subtle Tabs. Both came from one interaction idea: the fluid hover that I found so interesting. I wanted to see how far it could stretch. Your reactions kept me going, one component after another. At first I built them for my own products. Then client work fed in: no rebuilding of what already existed, just new components AI companies actually needed. The deeper I went, the more I wanted it to sit on solid ground, so I rebuilt everything around Radix and @shadcn registry conventions. Open-sourcing it was obvious. A paywall would have meant marketing, landing pages, and less care in each component. Open source meant I could keep following my curiosity. Around a few dozen components, I refactored around system foundations: Motion and Surface tokens. I'd done this kind of work for years; this time I could go as deep as I wanted. Then I started meeting people who'd used Fluid Functionalism to ship better products. That's still the best feeling. Somewhere along the way the library stopped being a side project for my products and became the product: shaped by your feedback, always asking what to build next. Most recently I turned the system pages and craft decisions into a skill, so the same thinking can travel into everyone's AI tools. There's so much more I want to build. Two principles guide it: •Design for excellence •Optimize for learning and creativity With 15,000+ monthly visits and now 1,000 stars, thank you for your trust. Keep sharing what you build with it, opening issues, sending PRs, and pitching ideas by DM. You're what keeps those two principles alive. And if you're thinking about starting: pick one interaction you can't stop thinking about, build it for your own real use, and post it before it feels ready. Lean on existing standards, add structure, and let the people using your work tell you what's next. Fluid Functionalism began as two components and a posting challenge.

❌ 5 no-gos: - No uppercase: hierarchy comes from size and weight. - No letter-spacing: handled with Inter's optical sizing. - No eyebrows: a section starts with its title. - No difference with markdown: it uses the same styles and colors as everything else. - No opacity for text: it's foreground or muted, never a faded step of them.
