you know in a lot of ways rust is just like the market you spawn naked on a beach with a rock. everyone does. the entire game is what you do with time from there, and almost none of it is against the environment. the bears and the radiation are a rounding error. the only thing that can genuinely hurt you is other players. it's pure pvp larping as a survival game, which is also just trading and everyone is playing a completely different game on the same map you've got the american 20 somethings who've sniffed enough adderall to see through time and put 3000+ hours into UKN learning to hold an ak spray perfectly while blasting king of the dead like they're trying to make a montage on vital in the big 26. no strategy. barely a base. they will kill you from 200m with a gun you didn't know they had. that's the mev guys, the snipers, the prop firm kids, pure mechanical edge, and in a straight 1v1 it's pretty much unbeatable. put them in any situation that isn't a straight up gunfight and they're as lost as the rest of us we have the european: never fires a shot (mostly because he's alt-tabbed working on uploading half the time). around 1000-2500 hours, most of it in build servers, designing honeycomb layouts and running raid costs in a spreadsheet. he is not going to win. he has never won. but every base on that server is using his design, including the zerg that eventually raids him. that's the researcher. the dune guy. the person whose thread you read right before you aped. enormous influence, catastrophic pnl, weirdly at peace with it can't forget about timmy with 20 boxes of loot and 6 aks he's too scared to take outside. timmy never roams, never fights, just accumulates. timmy isn't really playing at that point, he's doing inventory management. and he loses all of it in one go at 4am while he's asleep, which is the part that actually sucks. what gets you is almost never a fair fight, it's that they turned up while timmy wasn't there and the naked with a rock who follows you for ten minutes. no gear, no plan, nothing to lose. 99 times out of 100 you ignore him. the 100th time he blasts your shit in with an eoka and comes out with a full metal kit and an ak. that's the guy who put 200 bucks into something stupid and doesn't work anymore (honestly fucking legend) and then of course then the 100 man chinese zerg. no individual member is good. no account has more than 10 hours on rust or even a profile picture. doesn't matter even slightly. they'll throw 40 bodies at your door, lose all 40, and take the base anyway, because 40 bodies costs them nothing when they have another 150 guys in wechat ready to log in. that's capital. that's the whole lesson. you can outplay every single person in that group and still lose, because being right isn't the same as being able to survive being wrong for longer than the other guy but the actual thing - the reason it's the market and not just a game with mildly funny character tropes in it: the wipe every one of these people, however good, loses everything on a schedule they know about in advance. the stim abuser, the euro autists, timmies, zergs, so on. server resets and it's gone. and all of them play like it won't happen to them specifically, this time the ones who do best aren't the best at any part of it. they're just the only ones playing like they already know the wipe is coming
