I remember Burnham as a minister under Blair & Brown. He was unremarkable but the thing that worries me most is he seeks popularity. He’s all things to all people. Fundamentally unstable. Reminds me of Johnson. Both high profile mayors with a flair for PR & not much to back it up

This article says climate change is “believed to have played a role” in the UK's extreme heat this week. As a climate scientist, let me fact-check that. First, climate change is not a religion. No belief is required. It is about evidence. And the evidence has been crystal clear for more than two decades: climate change is making heat waves hotter, longer, more frequent and more dangerous. In fact, science has advanced far beyond saying climate change merely “played a role.” Today, we can quantify how much more likely and how much hotter climate change made a specific event. Here's the bottom line: Climate is changing. Humans are responsible. And we are experiencing the impacts now. That’s the bad news. The good news is that solutions already exist, and the majority of people care - 89%, around the world! But meaningful action depends on helping people understand not just what is happening: we need to know how it affects our lives (this heat wave being example A today) and what we can do about it. That’s the opportunity this reporting missed. bbc.com/news/articles/c8xwwp…

Statement from Amazon MGM Studios: “The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”

Steve Bannon has *finally*been indicted. BIG news in America. But let’s not forget Big Steve’s interference in our own democracy. (And how Facebook has facilitated him at every turn.) 1/

Is the arrest of Andrew "worse than the Abdication...?" Yes it damned well is. The Epstein scandal is about the abuse of women including one who took her own life. The Abdication was a powerful man giving up a job. THERE IS NO COMPARISON and only rich & powerful men would ever think there was. (Andrew has denied all wrongdoing.)

A teenager from Iran sent me these videos with this message: “I was terrified while filming them. Please share them and show the world that we, the people of Iran, do not want this regime.” The protests in Iran began in Tehran and are now spreading to cities across the country. This is seismic. When the Telegraph - the house paper of Brexit - publishes a 2,000-word obituary admitting: 📉 Brexit has cut UK GDP by up to 8% 📉 Investment down 18% 📉 Productivity down 4% 📉 Employment down 4% 📉 No trade benefits 📉 No regulatory freedom 📉 No immigration control 📉 No growth …it’s over. This isn’t Remainers talking. This is the Telegraph saying Brexit has been an unmitigated economic failure. The numbers are now so bad, so undeniable, that even the architects of the project can’t keep pretending. Brexit wasn’t a reset. It wasn’t sovereignty. It wasn’t taking back control. It was a slow economic strangulation: a textbook case of national self-harm, dragging investment, wages, growth and confidence down with it. We can’t build a future on a foundation of lies. Time to repair the damage. Time to rejoin the single market. Time to put the country first.
🚩😮 Peak F*CK ME Brexit moment When the Telegraph - THE BREXITGRAPH - publishes a full-blown obituary for Brexit, admitting: 📉 GDP down up to 8% 📉 Investment down 18% 📉 Productivity down 4% 📉 Employment down 4% ❌ No trade benefits ❌ No control of immigration ❌ No regulatory freedom ❌ No upside whatsoever …that’s not a debate anymore. That’s a death 💀 certificate for Brexit!!! This is the moment the Right’s own economists finally say the quiet part out loud: Brexit has been an unmitigated economic disaster. Not mixed. Not needs time. Not teething problems. A. Total. F*cking. Failure. And if even the Telegraph can say it then every politician still defending Brexit is lying to the public and lying to themselves. It’s time to stop pretending. It’s time to fix this mess. It’s time to rejoin the single market. Country before bullshit. 🔗 archive.ph/2025.11.29-132733…

The internet shutdown in Afghanistan happened in real time in my online poetry class on Monday. The women's accounts dropped out one by one. The last to go was Neda. Just before her image froze, I promised to put her poem on Twitter. She's 11. Online was her last hope of education. @WRNAfghanistan

Gentle reminder that if 1/100000 of this anti-war energy was spent while Iran was directing the slaughter houses in Iraq and Syria, while its proxies assassinated leaders in Lebanon and dismantled politics in Yemen, we wouldn't be here.

I struggle with the Casey audit repeatedly making the assertion group based child sexual exploitation is “rare” while acknowledging 700 recorded offences in one recent year, a chronic under reporting problem, & wholly inadequate data keeping.

"You're going to have less time for your kids and you're still going to have to go to the food bank on your lunch break. I mean, it's crazy." One of our London-based parent campaigners, Thea, spoke to @BBCNewsnight about why getting parents into work alone isn't enough to reduce child poverty. Sign Thea's petition to push the UK Government to take action to reduce children poverty, including scrapping the two-child limit here: bit.ly/45tNnWg

Slashing benefits to meet an arbitrary fiscal target would be unethical, short sighted and illogical. ❌ 2 in 5 people receiving disability benefits already experience hardship – meaning they are either unable to afford enough food, heat their home or pay household bills. 1/3

My experience of reporting on welfare cuts over the last 12 years is that they result in very high levels of human misery and don't save anything like as much as they were intended to - especially when other costs are factored in. I don't expect Reeves' to be much different

This is an absolutely horrific story of NHS incompetence. It’s hard to believe the number of times staff missed opportunities to save a baby’s life by failing to recognise what seem very obvious warning signs. Maternity isn’t treated as a serious medical discipline in the UK
💔 NEW: A hospital at the centre of the largest NHS maternity scandal let a baby's body decompose so badly it was 'triple bagged' for the funeral - midwives then "mocked" the dad, replaying a phone call he'd made at a "leadership away day" New link: thetimes.com/article/82a2ed8…
