🌒 We are honored to be selected by @NASA to advance our compact lunar dust and surface-charging monitoring instrument, in collaboration with @NASAGoddard.
We are very happy to share that @mission_space was selected by @NASA_Technology to advance LEEMR, our lunar dust and surface-charging monitoring instrument, in collaboration with Goddard Space Flight Center! For a small team, this means a lot. We started Mission Space around a simple technical gap: space operators need better environmental data where missions actually happen. First in orbit. Now, increasingly, on the lunar surface. LEEMR is designed for local measurements around lunar infrastructure: landers, rovers, habitats, power systems, tools, and surface stations. It will measure dust density variation, dust charging levels, and surface charge accumulation in real time. As Artemis and commercial lunar missions move from single demonstrations toward repeated surface operations, this kind of local data becomes part of the infrastructure. We are honored to be in this cohort alongside companies such as @Axiom_Space, @LMSpace, @RogueSpaceCorp, @astrobotic, @LunarOutpostInc, and @zeno_power.

The South Atlantic Anomaly doesn't have a fixed boundary. Macau Science Satellite-1 measured 40–200 keV electron bursts outside it, lasting ~2 minutes. A study links them to electric-field disturbances. Static radiation maps can miss these exposures. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

After @JetBlue 1230's Oct 2025 incident, Airbus flagged ~6,000 A320-family jets for precautionary fixes. @Airbus said intense solar radiation may corrupt flight-control data; EASA identified a software vulnerability. ad.easa.europa.eu/ad/2026-01…

Here’s a space-weather impact I hadn’t seen documented before. During the October 2024 geomagnetic storm, industrial mine shovels in Alberta repeatedly tripped offline. These machines run on 13.8 kV power, with cables up to 10 km long. Researchers suspect induced currents interfered with their 30 V grounding safety circuits. frontiersin.org/journals/phy…

NOAA Oct 27: Kp forecast peaks at 2.67 through Oct 29. Today’s probabilities: R1–R2 radio blackout 10%; S1+ proton storm 1%. Kp measures geomagnetic disturbance, not flare X-rays or energetic protons.

Space Weather Incident: On Nov 4, 2015, Belgian air-traffic radar showed false aircraft echoes pointed toward the Sun. A ~100,000 SFU solar radio burst near 1 GHz was the likely cause. The radar software filtered the false targets; flights continued. swsc-journal.org/articles/sw…

Music to my ears every time #spaceweather is mentioned as an important component of DoW missions. Especially when the Space Force talks about integrating space weather data into mission planning, operations, and distinguishing natural environmental effects from hostile interference. More of this, please!

NOAA recorded Kp 5 (G1) in the past 24h. A negative-polarity coronal-hole stream is expected on the 24th, with Kp 4.33. Fast solar wind compresses slower wind into a co-rotating interaction region, increasing plasma density and magnetic-field strength ahead of the stream.

Singapore’s 3D digital twin came up during the Digital Engineering panel at @USSF_SSC Industry Day today, and it got me thinking: how cool would it be to build a digital twin of a Moon base? Imagine being able to simulate the radiation environment, surface charging, dust behavior, and how all of that changes with solar activity, across the entire base and its surrounding environment. At @mission_space, we’ve already started modeling the Sun–Earth–Moon environment. One of the biggest challenges is getting enough real measurements to validate those models. You can’t reconstruct such a complex and dynamic environment from a few instruments or locations. We need distributed measurements across cislunar space, lunar orbit, and the lunar surface, including through the lunar night. Would love to see this become part of the Moon base architecture.

Possible G1 geomagnetic activity today. A 25% chance of R1–R2 radio blackouts from solar flares and a 5% chance of an S1 radiation storm. Different drivers, different hazards: geomagnetic disturbances affect LEO drag and GNSS; flare X-rays affect sunlit-side HF communications.

In 1997, Telstar 401 failed during a period of enhanced radiation-belt electron activity. The satellite’s loss delayed USGS earthquake-data reporting by several hours across roughly two-thirds of the US. The operator collected $132M in insurance.

NASA’s ARTEMIS observed electrostatic shocks in the Moon’s plasma wake. As solar-wind plasma refills the wake, opposing ion beams collide. One observed shock produced a ~50 V potential jump, slowed ions by ~60 km/s and heated electrons by ~50 eV. iopscience.iop.org/article/1…
