Going through photos on my phone and got a bit nostalgic with all the mangrove pictures from Kulhudhuffushi. Going to tweet out a couple of them. All photos taken by me for @IndependentMV.

Overnight tax hikes erode confidence in Maldives tourism, unsettling operators, deterring investment, disrupting commitments, and weakening
competitiveness.
Tourism cannot thrive on uncertainty. We need stability, predictability, and real industry consultation.

🔔MJA strongly condemns the exclusion of several popular media outlets from President Muizzu's press conference today. This is a direct obstruction of press freedom and the public's right to information. We urge the President's Office to ensure equal access for all media outlets.

Joint Statement by MJA & @TransparencyMV: We strongly condemn the Public Accounts Committee’s amendment to the Foreign Exchange Bill, which bans media from reporting parallel market FX rates. We urge Parliament to reject the bill.
Reporting the realities of the parallel FX market isn't "market manipulation"; it's holding policymakers accountable and stating the economic facts. Banning media from reporting black market dollar rates is outright censorship. Parliament must reject this unconsulted amendment to the Foreign Exchange Bill.
Today, 8 August 2026, marks 12 years since our youngest brother, Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla, was abducted from outside his home in Hulhumalé.
12 years of a family waiting for answers.
12 years of waiting for justice.
12 years of impunity.
We have not forgotten. #FindMoyameehaa

I wouldn't call this commendable. However, I do recognise that the Bank is trying to avert a potential banking crisis caused by the dollar shortage. BML is adapting to the market conditions it faces. The more important question is why the Government has allowed those conditions to persist rather than addressing the underlying fiscal and macroeconomic imbalances that created them.
What BML is trying to do is commendable. There is an acute shortage of foreign currency because the government has failed to restructure debt or reduce USD spending. BML needs foreign currency to meet customer demand. So BML is working to buy USD from the parallel market, as the government will also not float the MVR.
In short:
1. The government has no plan for debt restructuring.
2. The government cannot reduce USD spending, and
3. The government will not float the MVR.
So, to keep the bank solvent, BML needs to acquire foreign currency.
