Congrats, @Knoxville_PD!
Historic lows in major crimes.

It's not simply inflation.
Fascinating NYT piece that shows various things - houses, college, child care, entertainment - after adjusting for inflation are still much more expensive now - sometimes even 6x as much - than they were 40 years ago.

ICYMI: @AaronChalfin, Kapustin, et al eval found that Baltimore's policing strategy was a driver of their historic decline in violent crime. Homicides in Baltimore fell roughly 25% more than in comparable large U.S. cities.

Back in Trenton today to testify on the Assembly version of this bill, A4202.
Happy to say the bill passed out of both committees unanimously.
Great to see shared action to make New Jersey safer and more just.

Need someone good for this.
Come work with me! My team at Anthropic is hiring someone to help develop our public policy positions on frontier AI safety: topics like loss-of-control, automation of AI R&D, monitorability, and independent evaluation. We’re looking for someone with deep expertise in some of these areas and familiarity with the technical AI safety/governance landscape. You’d develop new policy positions, participate in cross-company fora, give feedback on AI safety legislation, and work closely with our technical teams. It’ll be a blast.

First bill I ever filed as a legislator was for felony arrestee DNA. KY has yet to adopt it, but a number of other states have. No telling how many cold cases remain cold, and violent offenders behind them remain free, because this isn't widely used as an investigative lead.
I was in Trenton, NJ this morning to testify in support of S4312, which expands collection of DNA for human trafficking, car jacking, arson, & burglary arrests.
DNA helps solve more crimes & protects the innocent. It will make NJ safer & more just.

Preliminary evidence suggests GLP-1 drugs may reduce cravings for addictive substances, but stronger evidence is needed to support broader access.
We @Arnold_Ventures are proud to fund the most rigorous study ever of effect of GLP-1s on alcohol/opioid use and downstream impacts.
We are hiring! Come join our team @Arnold_Ventures

"Boosting public safety starts with fully funding federal prisons. Understaffing makes work dangerous for those who are on duty, and it worsens conditions for those who live in prison." - from @ScottEPeyton1

You might have noticed that campus sexual assault is in the news! (Again. Sigh.)
This form of violent crime is a pervasive but solvable problem. I wrote a piece for @VitalCityNYC about how technology offers new, promising solutions — from Callisto and DNA databases to match cases from the same perpetrator, to The Fund to Prevent Sexual Assault's first cohort of scalable interventions to help young men form healthier romantic relationships. We have a lot of work to do, but I am optimistic that progress is possible.
This is the type of problem I'm excited to help solve with the public safety R&D engine I'm building at @RenPhilanthropy.

Hey! I wrote a peer-reviewed white paper on why ALPRs offer important public safety benefits; why poor regulation and misuse are threats to liberty; how law, policy, and design can address this. Note: my work was funded by @flocksafety. They had no input.

Communities deserve tools that help solve serious crimes and locate missing or vulnerable individuals. But public trust depends on strong safeguards and respect for privacy.
The question isn't whether technology should play a role in public safety. It's whether we can implement it responsibly, with clear rules, oversight, transparency, and protections against misuse.

Cities must adopt better guardrails around surveillance technologies to prevent misuse, but discarding them is not the answer.
