That supposed ‘viral advertisement’ for Chinese glassmaker Hengxinfeng you’ve been seeing on your timeline? There’s no evidence it was ever a viral ad, nor that it originally made waves in China. The video is real: rioters in Paris slamming into the windows of a Louis Vuitton store. The glass cracks but holds, and they're unable to loot the store. The accompanying text in the widespread tweets says, “A Chinese glass company just turned the RIOTS in France into FREE advertising! Hengxinfeng filmed NOTHING, just posted a video of its unbreakable windows on social media, and went VIRAL.” (teapaw.org/GlobalDiss/status/2115…) That claim not only went viral on X, but was covered across media outlets like the Daily Mail and CNBC, which reported that a Chinese glass company named Hengxinfeng used the France riots for viral marketing. Some called it a “Masterclass in marketing,” “One of the better ads I've seen lately.” What's peculiar is that no such ad or repost from the company can be found. Every version I traced leads back to Weibo blogger 缘木球鱼, who posted the video on Oct 26, writing: “Just look at how crucial high-quality bulletproof glass is. Demand for bulletproof glass in Europe is only going to grow.” No mention of Hengxinfeng. The LV store never disclosed who made its windows, either. Hengxinfeng is a real glassmaking company in Pingdingshan, Henan, listed on the Made-in-China B2B site. They’re not that big and are hardly active on social media. This seems to be a manufactured social media loop, starting with a Moscow-based X account claiming it was a viral ad in China. The Western media trend—which actually DID go superviral—was built on that premise. “It went viral in China” is used to sell a story here, without any sources, and media outlets blindly repeat it. The story then ends up being shared in China, copied from X and Facebook: Weibo bloggers translated the posts word for word, and Chinese media amplified them. What this story sells more than glass is the idea that China is thriving while France is failing, that where there’s chaos in the West, there’s made-in-China reliability. As one commenter said: “The best advertising is the kind your enemy does for you.” The funniest thing? An account named Hengxinfeng Special Glass posted the video on Instagram today. With 7 likes, it’s not entirely viral yet, but perhaps that’s irrelevant by now as we already know they’re good at making security glass...and getting free marketing.
