My latest for the Guardian.
Centrism didn’t win the Democratic Party this election.

Wow, the Powell memo goes mainstream!
James Talarico traces 50 years of trickle-down back to one 1971 document, the Powell memo, a corporate blueprint to buy power
“In fact, you can, you can pinpoint this one document called the Powell memo, 1971.”
“But if you read this memo, it's basically a blueprint for how corporate interests can start to dismantle the Great Society and the New Deal”
“They're going to spend massive amounts of money in our politics, buying politicians in both parties, elevate corporate voices in media, appoint sympathetic judges.”
“And that has really been the story of the last 50 years in this country, last five decades.”

The backlash against data centres should be the beginning of a much bigger conversation about the tech industry. We need less technology forced into every corner of our lives, not more. Cars don’t need giant screens, refrigerators don’t need computers, and every aspect of our lives doesn’t need to be monitored, tracked or turned into another app designed to collect our personal data.

🚨NEW: An amazing thing is happening - in celebrating @JamesTalarico's anti-oligarch politics, Corporate Dems are (accidentally) admitting their whole political formula was wrong, and Bernie-style populism was the right formula all along.
Welcome to the political revolution!

Now this looks so cringe and juvenile. Their downfall began from here. Today they can only protest in Congress ruled states.

DEMOCRATS MUST DELIVER
Trumpism grew out of the failure of the Democratic Party to stand with working families. That cannot continue. At a time of unprecedented income and wealth inequality and declining faith in democracy, Democrats MUST deliver. No excuses.
- Medicare for All
- A $20-an-hour minimum wage
- The PRO Act
- A wealth tax on billionaires, which would pay for universal childcare, free public colleges and universities, and a massive housing program
- An AI data center moratorium
- Bringing ICE under control and comprehensive immigration reform
- REAL campaign finance reform

Hard to overstate how gratifying it is to see @JamesTalarico talk about the Powell Memo right after the @LeverNews podcast/book MASTER PLAN on that memo went viral. You truly love to see it.

I've spent almost a quarter century arguing that anti-oligarch populism is actually moderate politics, and explaining how the political class has nonetheless used terms "centrism" and "moderate" to try to gaslight Americans into believing a loathed corporate agenda is mainstream.
The 2026 election completely proved my point. Anti-oligarchy is centrism - read: it is at the mainstream center of public opinion.

This is called oratory, not the bullshit we hear from Dear Leader. I often wonder if we had lost our senses and not condemned the nonsense we've been subjected to day in and day out by the govt and its media? We have shown unbelievable subservience for 14 years at a stretch. Now hopefully, we've reached the end of the tether.
