ALT 🧬 Could damaged spinal cords one day recover the ability to move? Scientists at Keio University in Japan have taken an important step toward answering that question. In a world-first clinical study, researchers transplanted approximately two million stem-cell-derived neural precursor cells into each of four patients with severe spinal cord injuries. The results brought cautious hope. After treatment, two patients improved from the most severe injury classification to less severe categories. The group’s median motor score increased by 13 points at one year. Researchers also reported no tumor formation or serious side effects attributed to the transplanted cells during follow-up of up to four years. These specially developed cells may help repair damaged neural pathways, but scientists are still investigating how well they work and for whom.
