Just imagine having to apologize to the very people who are excluding you because of your disability.
I apologised to the members of the Assisted Dying Bill committee tonight as I had to leave early.
I didn’t want to but had to because my hearing aids need to recharge after 15 hours use and without them I cannot hear or take part in the committee.
Hearing isn’t a choice for me.
I’ve raised this issue repeatedly with members of the committee and it’s sad that I’m unable to continue today.
I have chosen to give up a lot, especially during Ramadan, to make sure I can contribute in this committee and in politics.
I wanted to stay as long as I could for these hugely important discussions and it is frustrating that I cannot because of my disability.

De-funding libraries, removing the teaching of books from public schools, the culling of the humanities from universities—all are driven by a belief that working-class people don’t deserve access to art and literature, that our sole purpose is to keep the economy running.

For the past 150 years we've had compulsory education and near-universal literacy, and this has proven profoundly destabilizing to the powers that be. They now want to turn back to the clock to an illiterate world, like that of the early Victorian era.

The folks who are pushing for ChatGPT to replace teachers and textbooks don’t care that it makes people dumber because that is its purpose. That is what it was designed to do. They want to create a world where the very rich are educated and the rest of us are illiterate.

Two of Elon Musk’s posts today alone show he clearly has a British adviser, how else would he know who Laurence Fox is and use language like “Please call your member of Parliament….?” There is either an individual or small team working on this - I bet we find out and I bet we know them.

Reform UK is an essentially xenophobic org that has done much to debase politics, tarnish public life and diminish the national interest. The Tories at their moral & electoral nadir have sought to emulate it rather than ostracise it. There’s little more to say.

I often tweet quotes from guests on @TimesRadio both male and female. It blows my mind that remarks from women always draw sexist and misogynistic comments about intelligence, weight and relationship status no matter the subject. Posting because just accepting this feels grim.

Update:
The authorities in Iran are now claiming that a young woman, who courageously removed her clothes in protest against harassment by the morality, police at her university, suffers from psychological illness and has been admitted to a mental health hospital.
This accusation of mental instability is a familiar tactic by the Islamic Republic.
In 2014, when I launched the My Stealthy Freedom campaign against compulsory hijab, the regime used similar lies against me, claiming I had a mental breakdown, undressed myself on the London subway and was raped by three men.
This is how they attempt to undermine those who resist their oppression.
One student who witnessed the entire incident says:
“On Saturday, November 2, we saw the university’s security and Basij forces trying to forcibly drag a female student into the security room, under the pretext of her not wearing a proper hijab. She resisted, and in the struggle, her hoodie was pulled off, leaving her with only her undergarments underneath. Shocked, the security officers let her go, after which, in a moment of rage, she removed her pants and threw them at the officers.”
This eyewitness account directly contradicts the regime’s narrative and shows the extent of brutality Iranian women face for the most basic acts of defiance.
This woman has been forcibly hospitalized under psychiatric supervision—marking the start of torture and, soon after, the cycle of forced confessions.
I believe her life is now in serious danger. I urge international media, human rights organizations, and the international community to support her before is too late.
Let’s be her voice.

Img: from 1900.

ALT We see a nineteenth century railway compartment, showing two people on either side. A woman on the left and a man right sit, not reading, with books in their hand. At the back, on the right, a well dressed man holding a newspaper stands holding his other hand to his head. They are all seemingly annoyed by the man at the back, sitting on the left seat, who is playing a trumpet.
