After teaching the same subject for years, it's easy to forget what it feels like to encounter something for the first time.
The directions seem obvious. The assignment seems straightforward. You've taught this lesson enough times to know exactly where students usually struggle.
But the student sitting in front of you doesn't have your years of experience.
They may need another explanation. They may be embarrassed to admit they're confused. They may already believe they're terrible at the subject before they've really had a chance to learn it.
Think about what happens when a student asks a question you've answered three times already.
Do they get another opportunity to understand, or do they walk away wishing they'd never asked?
That doesn't mean lowering expectations, accepting incomplete work, or making every lesson entertaining. Students still need challenging instruction, clear boundaries, and accountability.
But how we deliver those things shapes the classroom environment.
Students should be able to struggle without being embarrassed, make mistakes without being labeled, and ask for help without feeling like a burden.
We can't control every reason a student might dislike school. But we can pay attention to the experiences we're creating in our own classrooms.
Twenty years of teaching experience doesn't automatically make us the teacher a student needs today. We still have to earn their trust, teach them well, and remember what it's like to be learning something for the first time.
