Using daily temperature climatologies and a widely-adopted definition, we detect marine heatwaves and cold spells, heat spikes, and cold spikes since the 1940/50s. We provide event characteristics and a handy event index variable for selecting specific event types 馃憞

The resulting daily #temperature #climatology is useful for determining periods of anomalously high (e.g. #marineheatwaves) or low temperatures below the surface. The #methodology can be adopted and adapted at other sites with long term diverse datasets across the ocean.
To check whether we had made the right choices, the #methodology was tested using synthetically-created #temperatures. A synthetic hourly reference climatology was compared with synthetic climatologies created using various sampling resolution and different methodology steps.
#climatology depths were determined using the vertical distribution of bottle and mooring #data between 1953 and 2019. Depths were chosen to maximise the number of bottle measurements, considering that these data were collected over a large part of the 66 yr period.
Using 66 yrs of bottle, profiling CTD, and mooring #temperatures between 1953 and 2019, #data were quality controlled and combined. Temperature gaps in space and time were filled within pre-determined limits (8 m vertically and 2 days).
Have you ever wondered how to combine diverse multi-decade datasets to produce unbiased data products, such as daily #temperature #climatologies? ( thread)
