Thank you @ShopifyEng for providing a post mortem of the Cyber Monday incident.
As an ecommerce agency, we love @Shopify but honestly @tobi @harleyf there's a deafening silence right now with no one from leadership publicly addressing or even acknowledging the MAJOR Shopify outage this morning on Cyber Monday, the biggest day in eCommerce. Please go ahead and issue some sort of statement/apology to the millions of merchants on the most stressful day of the year that was made that much more stressful by them not being able to access the admin or POS for hours this morning. Please. 🙏
I called @OpenStore's collapse in June 2023.
Now it’s gone. ❌
40+ brands wiped out.
$150 million burned. 🔥
The story isn’t just OpenStore.
It’s a pattern of chasing models that experienced operators warned about for years.
OpenStore bought forty plus ecommerce brands, staffed up from Uber and Apple, and never brought in operators who had run inventory or CAC to LTV. 🤦♂️
Ignorance got treated like a strategy, and real businesses paid the price.
The same story showed up in iBuying.
$OPEN raised 2.1B, vaporized 1.4B, and is still hunting for profit years later. 📉
Meanwhile @zillow and @Redfin already stepped away after heavy losses.
@nejatian the new CEO at @Opendoor and @rabois the founder of @OpenStore and OpenDoor have both touted the promise of these models with no real profits to back it up. The outcomes across the sector tell a different story.
The aggregator graveyard keeps growing:
Thrasio, Perch, Heyday, Unybrands, OpenStore. 💀
Sixteen billion raised. Almost all gone.
The money didn’t disappear.
It proved what operators saw coming.
I wrote the full breakdown with the math, the pattern, and the receipts.

$OPEN @openstore

Considering $VGT is up YTD even more than that, not the best track record.
Saw 2 interesting signs in the new downtown Miami World Center. I very much expected to run into a Fyre Fest billboard too.

I don't think the point of index funds is to "get rich". The point is to incentive saving money, which most people are terrible at. Because of lifestyle inflation they typically just spend all that they make.
