Saturday at @khanlabschool's AI in Ed Summit: "No Hesitation." We name the real reasons educators hold back on AI, then set them aside and ski the fall line. Sat 10/24, 1 PM, Mountain View. Around through Sunday if you want to connect. links.kls.org/aied-expo

Temporal hypofrontalility
“A 2022 review of nearly 40 studies compared guided play to direct instruction – when a teacher delivers clearly defined, planned lessons in a prescribed manner – in children up to 8 years old. It found that guided play has a more significant positive impact than direct instruction on early math skills, shape knowledge, and being able to switch from one task to another.

I still think the biggest thing AI could do for teachers is show them what students know, and want to know, right now. Everything else is downstream of that.

Resistance to AI in schools usually isn't about the tool. Sometimes it's fear, sometimes it's values, sometimes it's just bandwidth. Each one needs a different first conversation.

Honest question for coordinators: when your district rolls out something big, like CBE grading, an AI policy, or a new math adoption, where do the real conversations about it happen? Staff meeting, hallway, or nowhere?

Most AI PD for teachers is still sit-and-get. What actually moves people is a real conversation with a colleague who's half a step ahead. That's the bet we're making with sideby.

Directors point the direction. Coordinators get the whole system from here to there, and most of that job is conversation. If you coordinate for a district or region, what are you coordinating towards this year?

How will AI change VR?

And with each other, hopefully. @sideby
we’re all just going to be talking to our computers aren’t we?

How much time ya got? It’d have to start with giving teachers (and students) more visibility into what students know and want to know at any given moment.
How would you reinvent the education system from the ground up?

I wish there were an approximate quote button on my keyboard. Like the squigly equals sign, but up high and at an angle, and which means so-and-so approximately said something.

Here’s something I’d semi-quote with respect to how high school students think about AI: „They say they hate it, use it all the time, and mostly create “one-shot slop”.„

@grok what might this look like?

When learners are intrinsically motivated rather than grade-driven, AI becomes a tool for indulging curiosity and achieving real goals rather than a shortcut to check a box. #mysonreedmadeawebapptomapgreekmythologycharacterrelationships🤯

Peer-to-peer learning conversations can scale without diluting quality — unlike traditional sit-and-get instruction, structured two-person sessions remain fully immersive while scaling across a cohort. #didyaknow
