At times, school used to feel like comedy-hour: kids often trying to get a laugh out of others. Now, school often feels like apathy-hour: kids trying to prove how little they care about EVERYTHING. It’s draining.

He was an icon, a genius, a legendary leader and one of the kindest individuals I have ever met. He would always get in the floor and talk to our students on their level, telling them fascinating stories of his life and the Civil Rights movement. We have lost America’s hero. 🙏

Like so many of you, I’m pained by these recent tragedies. And I’m exhausted by a heartbreak that never seems to stop. Right now it’s George, Breonna, and Ahmaud. Before that it was Eric, Sandra, and Michael. It just goes on, and on, and on.

Everything that’s happened the past few days shows why teaching history is so important. This entire week has been a best hits album of american racism, but bc many fail to understand its prior manifestations, people mistake regurgitated bigotry as if it appeared out of thin air.
