Debunking NSW Planning & TFNSW on Mallaty Creek! We've been underwhelmed (to say the least), at the misleading excuses given to terminate this Koala corridor where Koalas are already struggling, so here's a handy fact check! sydneybasinkoalanetwork.org.…

13 Koalas found in a survey in the Hills Hornsby region of Sydney by our network members (Hills Hornsby Rural Koala Project)! Koala Habitat isn't even formally recognised by State Gov in the Hills District. Thank goodness for amazing volunteer citizen scientists! Story below ⬇️

Large Uni of SYD study released today shows the genetic diversity of Sydney's Koalas on the decline due to the fragmentation of habitat by development. How many more alarm bells need to ring? @PennySharpemlc abc.net.au/news/2024-12-02/k…

Carbon capture instead of stopping oil & gas EVs instead of reducing car dependency Ocean cleanups instead of stopping plastic production Planting trees instead of ending deforestation Ever notice how all the fashionable 'solutions' are all aimed at not changing anything?

🧵Its official. 2024 is ALREADY the most deadliest year for Koalas on Appin Road, exceeding 2023, & nearly doubling from 2022. Clear advice by experts was given to @JohnGrahamALP, @campbelltownnsw, & @TransportforNSW that if followed, could have prevented most of these deaths.

Important context for the Casula Koala - look at all that recent land clearing! The bottom of the pic is Glenfield, where a koala was hit and killed last week. Not a laughing matter @johaylen @TransportforNSW
That’s not a eucalyptus tree! A koala has been captured on CCTV casually strolling through a train station in Sydney's south-west. The furry traveller was seen climbing up steps at Casula station before wandering dangerously close to the platform's edge - although incoming trains were warned to slow down when passing through the area. He was eventually spotted by a passing train guard who raised the alarm before police officers ushered the curious koala back into the bush.

We know of 10 koalas hit by vehicles in the Sydney Basin in the last 8 days in SouthWest Sydney and the Hawkesbury, both on main roads and back roads. PLEASE SLOW DOWN AND DRIVE DEFENSIVELY.

A family in Narellan Vale in Camden LGA were 'astonished' to find a koala in their backyard last week, as were we! Nicknamed Howey, he likely crossed the Hume Highway (!) pushed out by development in Campbelltown. It's urgent that @paulscullymp add Camden to the Koala 2021 SEPP.

We often talk about Koalas being a powerful "umbrella" species, but do you know what that means? We've written an explainer about how saving Koala habitat saves hundreds of other Australian species at the same time. bit.ly/3TtZ3ld

🧵 What can councils do to protect their koala populations? Quite a lot! The SBKN 2024 Council Election Policy outlines 7 actions Local Councils can take to protect koalas. 1. Implement a Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management. 2. Identify & Mitigate Vehicle Strike Hotspots

Koalas are predicted to go extinct in NSW in 25 yrs, yet 34yo trees on rural land are considered “regrowth” & don’t even need to be offset. It’s such unscientific madness my head hurts every time I think about it. @PennySharpemlc @TaraMoriarty @SueHigginson_
Tree planting and biodiversity offsets give the impression we can just create nature, or replace what we destroy. But we cannot No technology can create a 500 yr old tree, the only thing that can is 500 yrs Nature is irreplaceable, and we must treat it as such
