Our company-wide data and AI platform now runs on @databricks . Every employee has had access since June, and it's already in production on Monster Strike. What I care about here is the permissions design. Agents get access the same way people do, and we can trace whose authority an agent used and what it touched. Handing agents unrestricted access was never on the table. -- MIXI to Accelerate Company-Wide Data Integration With Databricks Data + AI Platform: Building Corporate Infrastructure for Humans and AI Agents mixi.co.jp/?post_type=en_new…

When I said that being able to use AI is now a floor in hiring, I wasn't raising the bar. I meant it will be ordinary in a few years. Nobody asks in an interview whether you can use electricity, and AI is heading to the same place. It stops being worth measuring. The change I was pointing at is that AI made it cheap to express an idea. Because it's cheap, the difference comes from whether you understand what you're using and use it properly. And what companies want from young people is for them to be the ones who change us. So I'd like them to be curious enough to have tried AI. That's all it is, no more and no less. Well. Some things don't land.

Read "An Alien Mind" this morning. What stayed with me wasn't the risk discussion but how it ends. Preserving human agency when most tasks can be done by machines. Preventing extreme concentration of power. Keeping humans in control of the future. None of those are engineering problems. They're questions about what we teach and what we build our institutions around. Worth a slow read. openai.com/index/an-alien-mi…
I wrote about the state of AI, why I’m concerned about the next few years, and the choices we need to make to keep the future in humanity’s hands. An Alien Mind: openai.com/index/an-alien-mi…

Our CTO ran a two-day build workshop for four Kamiyama Marugoto Kosen students on our scholarship. Day 1: hunt down parts in Akihabara, solder their own boards, then dinner and a lot of talking. Day 2: flash the firmware, then rework it with AI into whatever they wanted it to do. It started when one of them saw the light-up devices at our DREAMDAZE IV show in July and said, "we want these for our school festival." mixi.co.jp/sustainability/re…

I was on Shizuoka Asahi TV. The segment covered the prefecture's AI program for high school students, where I taught a session. The numbers they used: around 60% of our source code is written by AI, and a job that used to take a month now takes three days. But the session was about something else. We went through several topics, and every one came back to the same question. How do you use a small amount of slack to make someone feel good? Speed is where the slack comes from. A month-long job makes you drop most of what you wanted to do before you start. Three days leaves a little room. Fill that room in the name of craft and the work usually gets worse. The better use is to ask who you are surprising, and what makes them lose an hour without noticing. Whether you spend the little bit of room there is most of the job. The students in Shizuoka have seven months to build a business idea of their own. With AI, most of them will finish something. The difference will come from where they put the small bit of room it buys them. I want to see what they do with it. look.satv.co.jp/content_news…

I judged the final pitches at Nagoya's AI STARTUP CAMP today. Eight teams of middle and high school students spent eight days on real problems from four companies, then had seven minutes each to pitch. MIXI was one of the four, which is how I ended up in the judge's seat. I had a blast. When I asked one team what they'd learned about AI, they said it often misses what you mean, so you don't get what you want. And the free tier only takes you so far. They had something they wanted to build before they ever opened the tool, so they struggled with the gap between that and what the AI gave back. Caring that much about the details, having a story you want to tell, is rare. And one idea in the room was the kind you could build as-is and ship. You don't see that often. I hope they build it in one go and find out what the market thinks. Consumer products are brutal at the start. But that's where the dreams are. Thanks to RePlayce and the City of Nagoya for having me. I'm going home with more than I brought. ayc-nagoya.com/programs/camp

The first half is about hiring. In graduate recruiting, being able to use AI has become a floor rather than an advantage. Companies now assume new graduates are AI-native. Schools haven't caught up to that assumption yet, and the gap between the two is wide. The bar isn't "I've used ChatGPT," either. Close to half our code is written by AI now, and our design work has been running at 80 to 90 percent time reduction for months. Someone joins, gets handed a project, spends a month planning how to build it, and hears "that's two days of work." So our interviews changed. We care less about what you built and more about what story you were trying to tell with it, and which part you chose to obsess over. We don't look at academic credentials. Which is also why I think spending four years working, watching how the technology and the industry actually move, and then going to university afterward is a perfectly reasonable order to do things in. The second half is about learning. People keep saying the AI era rewards good questions. I only half agree. Questions are cheap. Finishing something and putting it in front of real people is the rare part. When I judge student pitches and hear "we're handing this off to the next class now," I always want to ask whether they actually wanted to build it. We also talked about kids. My five-year-old daughter thinks that when you draw something, it moves. We feed her drawings to a video model and they do. Printing is my job.
