The phased relocation of Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi marks an important development in the Maldives’ maritime trade infrastructure.
Beyond easing congestion in Malé, the project offers opportunities to improve cargo-handling capacity, reduce vessel turnaround times and strengthen supply-chain resilience.

Today marks a significant milestone for Maldives Ports Limited as we begin migrating operations from Malé Commercial Harbour to the Thilafushi.
As a first step, we have commenced handling of FCL containers cleared by sea transport at Thilafushi Cargo Terminal (TCT), where unstripped containers are loaded directly onto vessels.
We will be expanding services in the near future to include cargo stripped from containers.
Full migration is expected to be completed by November 11, 2027.

In a recent @IndianExpress column, @gs_aditya argues that India should establish clearer strategic red lines as President Muizzu expands the Maldives’ foreign partnerships, particularly with Pakistan.
He views growing defence cooperation with Pakistan as a potential challenge to India’s security interests in the Indian Ocean and suggests that New Delhi should communicate its concerns more explicitly.
The author also advocates reconsidering economic incentives if Maldivian foreign-policy decisions conflict with India’s strategic interests.

Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid is right to emphasise India’s importance to the Maldives. India’s financial assistance, infrastructure investments and longstanding security cooperation remain significant.
However, suggesting that India is the only country providing substantial assistance overlooks contributions from China, multilateral development banks and other international partners. Claims that the Maldives has lost international confidence also require measurable evidence, not merely political interpretation.
Recognising India’s strategic importance does not diminish the value of other partnerships. The Maldives’ national interest lies in maintaining strong relations with India while diversifying development assistance, investment and international cooperation.
Strategic diversification and close relations with India are not mutually exclusive.

The opening day of SINC 2026 at Crossroads Maldives highlighted the growing importance of space technology for island nations. Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO) President Madin Maseeh unveiled new Earth observation solutions, including DataHub, GeoHub, Liminal and Vona, designed to improve access to satellite data, island-level weather forecasting, ocean monitoring and maritime search and rescue.
Discussions also explored satellite ground stations, space surveillance, investment opportunities and international cooperation. For the Maldives, these developments have significant implications for maritime domain awareness, climate resilience and national security.
The strategic opportunity lies in developing locally accessible technologies, strengthening technical expertise and ensuring greater national control over critical maritime information. @sinc2026 @Msromv @Madin_Maseeh @NashwanMatheen

Former Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi has raised concerns about the sovereignty and security implications of Maldives–Pakistan defence cooperation. Those concerns merit consideration. However, as Defence Minister, she signed the 2021 UTF agreement with India, establishing a long-term defence cooperation framework with provisions for further extension.
The agreement also provided extensive legal protections, privileges and operational facilitation for Indian personnel in the Maldives.
These were significant commitments involving foreign defence personnel, raising equally important questions about transparency, parliamentary oversight and sovereign accountability. The standard for evaluating defence agreements must remain consistent, regardless of the foreign partner involved.
Ultimately, the question is whether each agreement protects Maldivian sovereignty and serves the national interest.

Concerns about Maldives – Pakistan security cooperation deserve consideration, but an important distinction is being overlooked. The maritime security MoU with the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, whose responsibilities include maritime law enforcement, fisheries protection and combating illegal activities at sea. Cooperation in these areas does not, by itself, constitute a military alliance or threaten India.
India’s security concerns are legitimate, but the agreement should be judged by its actual provisions and implementation, not geopolitical assumptions.
The Maldives can maintain close security cooperation with India while engaging other regional maritime agencies.

A Vanity Fair investigation by Matthew Cole alleges that Saudi and Emirati funds were channelled through undisclosed financial arrangements involving @jaredkushner during Trump’s first administration.
The allegations include US$750 million in a UAE bank account reportedly intended to support unofficial diplomatic initiatives, and a separate US$1 billion allegedly routed through Azerbaijan into Israel’s banking system. The reported arrangements raise questions about financial transparency, foreign influence and Gulf–Israeli diplomacy.
Kushner categorically denies wrongdoing. Neither the alleged transactions nor their purported purposes have been independently verified.
